Chronological order of the games?
I saw an older thread that touched on this before, but I was hoping for a clearer answer. I had not known anything about Devil May Cry until I decided to buy this game and had just now beat it.

I loved it, and really want to play some more and dive deeper into the universe, but have no idea what order the games go in. From what I read, this is only a reboot. So, if I wanted to follow any certain story, which games should I now get and play? And if they aren't all on steam, what systems are they on?

Thank you to anyone who can help out.

DmC happens in it's own universe so it has no baring what so ever on the story of the old games

the chronological order for the original DMC game's is

DMC3 - DMC1 - DMC 4 - DMC 2

there is also an Anime that happens in between 1 and 4

but each game and the Anime is it's own self contained story
they rarely bring up things from other games so you can play them in any order you wish

but imo the best order is the order they were released

DMC3's PC port is not very good its a hassle to fix

so i would suggest getting the HD collection on PS3 or Xbox360

as for DMC4 the PC ports work fine

DMC3 and 4 both have a special edition which come with extra characters to play as
the HD collection includes DMC3SE

Thank you kindly. I'll be getting them all ASAP; I'm excited. I loved this game.

Bear in mind that Devil May Cry 1 and 2 (from the original series) were never ported to PC, so your options are limited to getting the PS2 versions (if they're stll around), getting the PS3 Devil May Cry HD Collection (which includes HD remasters of DMC1, 2 and 3), or emulating them on your PC.

DMC2 is quite avoidable, don't worry. It adds nothing to the universe, and the gameplay is a bit bad.
DMC 2 is a medicore action game but its not terrible its just a tad dull and simple ( out side the excellent music). Its rather unfortunate becus lucia or whatever her name was had a cool looking devil trigger. Also the possed tank/helicopter fighters and the main villian were the only memorable boss fights rest of the game is really derivative and is a large step back from 1.

Theres also severale comic book but they are sort of how the eu was for starwars there not offical cannon thought they dont conflict with the games (example nero is flat out vergils son in one of them while in the game the link between them is "unclear").

DMC 3 is near perfection and DMC4 is a fairly good "action sandbox" but the level design and lack of enemy/bosses hurt it.The special edition also adds 3 other charcters I highly suggest it if you like this style of game.

In fairness, there's the SLIGHTEST chance that DMC5 is coming after 2.

I kinda hope not, I wanna still make 2 just nonexistant. But there's a chance.

I know you probably don't speak portuguease, but this Brazillian channel bring some official stuff about some games, and he is talking about the chronological order, and something about this game be the conclusion for the series.

Capcom has ignored DMC2 ever since it came out, I'm thinking DMC5 is after DMC2 due to Dante on the motorcycle being reminiscent of DMC2's ending. but at the same time DMC5 could very well be the game that makes DMC2 non canon.
