I know xD.
But in all honesty, I remember being very hyped for the trailer. This game was announced back when I was a late-teen; and I wanted this game to be good and prove the naysayers wrong.
I had high expectations for this game because CAPCOM approved ...but the fans said otherwise ...sadly :'(
I haven't bought and played it yet but ...I don't know if I should spend my money on it after all ...considering how much DmC: Devil May Cry tried to appeal to an audience that doesn't exist; and openly mocks its predecessors; also, Reuben Langdon and the others had nothing to do with DmC: Devil May Cry. This is the reason why I went with DMC5 instead.
And I especially don't feel obligated to buy DmC and supporting Ninja Theory after seeing all of those cringy interviews ''THAT old Dante from back then isn't cool anymore''(that's not what the guy exactly said but, that's how I interpreted it)
I hope I didn't derail too much but, I feel like DMC5 is ''the true successor'' if you know what I mean.
I really wanted DmC to be what it was meant to be: a western interpretation of DMC without the Japanese anime art-style and cheesy dialogue - what could have been; what they should have done instead; how Dante should have been; and the message of the story ...very much wasted.
I wanted DmC to surpass the original DMC1 in every way; when the game finally came out, I was waiting for people to say ''you know what, this game is really good and is so much better than DMC1'' ...said no one ever; I really wanted DmC to prove the fans wrong ...it didn't.
Well, I'm grateful that you like Devil May Cry 5.

Earlier this year I purchased the fan-acclaimed DMC5, expecting it to blow my brain out my bum. I ended up not liking it at all, and really had to force myself to play to the end. I still wasn't ready to give up on loving the OG series though. I thought, "DMC is a game that rewards skill. I had to play DmC through a few times before I got really good at it. Maybe I just need to git gud at DMC5 and then it will be fun." I watched and read a bunch of tutorials covering more advanced tactics. I played through DMC5 a second time on a harder difficulty and found that it wasn't getting any better.
I also thought that I might have lacked the context needed to fully appreciate the story. DMC4 was on sale, so I pick it up, played it through, and liked it even less. Then I figured that if I was going to delve into this uncomfortable hole, I should go all the way. So I picked up the DMC trilogy for peanuts and played through all three (yes, even DMC2). I was familiar with DMC2's reputation, but I was really shocked by how bad the original was, even by the standards of the time. DMC3 is the only game in the original series that I kind of liked, but that might just be because I played it right after DMC2. In every game, I was baffled by the total lack of character development, cohesive art direction, worldbuilding, or even plot. I couldn't believe that THESE unbaked placeholder architypes were the "loveable" characters that the cast of DmC reportedly failed to live up to. I've seen the hated reference Dante saying "♥♥♥♥ you!" to the succubus countless times, but they expect me to ignore the one who says. "The sky is fair. Always above everyone's head, no different." Dante saying "♥♥♥♥ you!" to the succubus is enough to condemn an entire game, but I'm supposed to shrug it off when the other one wants to fill my dark soul with LOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.
When I first played through DmC, I thought the writing and characters were kind of standard. Now that I've played the OG series, I realize that the writing in this game is nothing short of Shakespearean compared to that faff. DmC feels like it was written by a team of professional writers who understand the basics of plotting a story. DMC feels like it was written by me when I was thirteen years old.
The fact that most of the hated for this game is centered around the color of Dante's hair and the fact that Vergil is wearing a hat is a great indicator of the fact that the hatred is hyperbolic and unjustified.
