Different times. Today every game comes out with hype like new blockbuster movie. They all sold well: RE2, Metro, DmC 5, Sekiro etc.
I think we can have two Devil May Cry universes exist at the same time without issues, other franchises did this too, look at the Marvel for example.

I would seriously love sequels to the reboot that continue the alternative universe's story, keeping the same gameplay mechanics and controls. Then we would have DMC games that cater to a wider audience and their different preferences.
