We tried unsuccessfully and it actually locks you out of multiplayer for about an hour if you try. We ended up buying a second copy for lan play. Only tried it once successfully but haven't had time yet for a long session.
Obviously we don't have access to Internet when we play LAN games.
I'll be getting a refund for both copies due to false marketing (valid in at least Sweden). Very unfortunate.
This ^^ What is on their server while you are hosting a game is simply details on where the host is. The other player clicks that, the game gets those directions, and then the player connects to the local host. No on the fly gaming information flows through Giant's server - only the directions on how to locate the host and it of course verifies the key before giving you those directions.
I get that they don't want pirates to play their game, but saying LAN games are supported isn't really true.
Any modern modem/router will get your game to automatically run through LAN if that's the closest to your server. It's not a game feature.
Note: Games use "LAN features" to promote their games to be able to play in "offline LAN mode", which means you don't need an Internet connection to play locally. In this case you do need an active Internet connection, which means it's not really a "LAN mode". Like I said, any modern (10-year old) modem/router will rout your computer through LAN (local) if that's what's closest anyway.
