It can run on laptops depending on your specs.
To run FC3, you'll need a GTX nvidia card, or a AMD Radeon 58__/68__/69__/78__/79__ tier graphics card. If your laptop does not have the following, or it has Intel graphics, it will most likely not be able to play FC3 smoothly.

Ubisoft doesn't support laptops, because many with laptops either do not have a dedicated graphics card, or have a very low end card. Yet, these people with their very lowend gear, will hound Ubisoft support with rage, demanding why their game doesn't work.

I do understand Ubisoft's point of view, and yes I have a gaming LAPTOP and I can play FC3

I had problems with my laptop, it's running a GTX680m and the game is constantly crashing. I updated the drivers to the recently released ones from nvidia but the game is still crashing often at the recomended settings. Didn't want to have to turn down settings but may have to to get it to run.

Crashing on single player or multi?

SIngle player was fine for me, although I did get the occasional mutliplayer crash.

@OP: Ubisoft doesn't support laptops for this game:
"Additional:*Supported Video Cards at Time of Release: AMD Radeon™ HD 2900 / 3000 / 4000 / 5000 / 6000 / 7000 series, NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX / 9 / 200 / 400 / 500 / 600 series. Laptop versions of these cards may work, but are not supported. These chipsets are the only ones that will run this game. For the most up-to-date minimum requirement listings, please visit the FAQ on our support website at http://support.ubi.com.
Requires a UPlay account"

That is most likely because this game requires a higher powered GPU to render all the content. Laptops still use more mobo resources to operate because laptop GPU's are onboard which means they are tied directly into the overall design; and it means that the laptop GPU shares the power from the battery and power adapter through the circuitry. However on desktops they are independent GPU cards and use direct power from the PSU, which make them way more powerful then laptops GPU's.

Also this game is very resource intensive for the GFX.
And finally I doubt they even tested this game on laptops...

I played Far Cry 3 on my MSi GX60 with HD7970m.
Got stable 30 fps outdoors on very high, so yea a modern gaming laptop can play this game.

But I think that any notebook with GPU that compares in term of performance to GT 640m or 650m will play this game on medium HD or HD+ resolution.

For FHD (1920x1080) you need at least 660m, but better if 670m or up.

My video card is a nvidia geforce 635m

i played this fine on my laptop too. i have a i7 3720QM and GTX 680M. 1080p at very high settings with around 45-60 fps average, and Ultra i got around 35-40 fps average. but i prefer to play at very high, because it plays smoother.

This game is a rip off. If it doesn't run, don't release it. It is vurtiually unplayable with lighting issues, voice and sound delay, lag, and choppy graphics. I have a windows 7 64 bit, an Alien Ware laptop, and an Intel Core i7. Burning $60 in a pit would have been more entertaining than getting this game. If you want it, buy it for Xbox 360, NOT PC.

It runs fine on my laptop. Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z7C-S01US. i7, 8gb ram, Nvidia GT 650m overclocked to 900Mhz.

I would say no on the Lenovo z580 i5. It only has Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Ah, didn't find that part. It will run but will probably have to tune the video settings down.

Most likely on low [but set texture detail to high].

I play this in co-op mode with a friend and we both have Toshiba Qosmio with nvidia 460's in them. Runs just fine.
