The Size of the Island IMPORTANT

Hey so i really interested in this game, tehre is only one thing i need to know.

I heard before release that Farcry 3 was 10x the size of farcry 2

I dont know if i believe that, seeing as farcry 2 was like 2x as big as Oblivion.


So here is question how big really is the world size in farcry 3, how big is the map size/island?

It's pretty damned big. I've spent maybe 12 hours in game so far and have maybe only covered 1/4 of the FIRST island. I believe there are two islands for single player and a 3rd exclusively for multiplayer..but..don't quote me on that.

It is not 10 times as big as FC2, but absolutely big enough. My guess would be inbetween same size and twice the size of FC2. But it has been a long time since I played FC2

It's massive, I would say that 10x the size of the FC2 world was a completely accurate assessment.

I'm gonna say that the map for FC3 is actually smaller than the map for FC2, but they deffinitely made the whole map of FC3 playable. Unlike areas of FC2 where there was no reason to be there. In this game, between skinning animals and items to colelct, they essentially make you go everywhere.

Smaller map, but you traverse more land than you do in FC2.

It's large, but it's nothing ground breaking.

It's big enough to successfully work for the campaign.

That is a good question, how does one compare something to HUGE? I would still say maybe "a bit HUGER".

Here is the article, honestly after looking back at the Far Cry 2 world map it is very small in comparison.

ima getting alot of conflicting answers, although im having trouble beleiving FC3 could be nearly as big a world A FC2, and be full of content.


How big is it say to, Skyrim, Oblivion?

I want a huge world to get lost in, lots of stuff to fight.

far cry 2 was literally immense, in the intro cinematic you are just talking to this dude, and being drivin in a jeep and you drive FOREVER, at highspeed just farther and farther into africa, map was giant.

It's bigger in every way imaginable, CONSIDERABLY larger world, I already linked you to an interview with a guy from Ubisoft stating that the world environment is ten times larger, he's not exaggerating. On top of that it also has I would say easily ten times the content in terms of what there is to do in the world. You could play for days on end before you even get wrapped up in the story of the game, there is so much to do it's incredible.

FC2 was a joke compared to FC1. The map in FC2 is a console limited map with invisible walls and limited area to roam due to the narrow areas allowed to travel. I laughed when I played it, but it still had a lot going for it in other areas. They promissed the map would not be this way in FC3, but I can almost garuneteed they lied out their asses, just like Dice did with BF3.

Someone said FC2 was immense.... LOL noob. Check out JC2, and it was on a console which is an amazing feet.

They didn't lie about the map for this game, if you can see it you can go to it.

I liked Farcry 2, but it had a tiny map.

I haven't played FC2 in ages, so I can't comment on that with 100% certainty. I do, however, want to mention that there were quite a few inaccessible areas in the FC2 map. I always assumed they chopped up the map into "corridors" due to technical reasons on consoles.

The FC3 map is quite different, it's one big, totally accessible area. However, there's quite a bit of water too, and you usually don't want to go to where the water is because there's hardly anything to do there. It looks pretty, though.

I checked the grids ingame using the waypoint system which tells you the exact distance. The grids are accurate. The Northern island has roughly 10 square kilometers of land. If you go south, 1.5 kilometer, you'll find the Southern island. It's a bit smaller, roughly 8 square kilometers of land. So that's a total of 18 Km2. Then there's the water, which is more tricky to count. There's roughly 12 square kilometers of usable water. But you probably won't use it that much, there isn't that much to do there. Although some people say they enjoy diving.

Well, anyway, that's technically 30 km2 for the singleplayer.

Now we need someone to do the same for FC2. Hop into the game, use something that shows the exact distance and then try to calculate the exact size of the entire map.

I did find this map for FC2, but I don't know how accurate it is. It does have a scale (at the bottom) that we can use to measure it from outside of the game. If we go by that map, it's 9 square kilometers, inaccessible areas included:

So FC2 has a map of 18 km2 in total, inaccessible areas included.


To summarize: FC3 has 30 km2. FC2 has 18 km2. But I haven't checked the FC2 map ingame.
