Do you have the CPU overclocked? You should first remove any overclocks on your CPU and GPU before troubleshooting - as intensive DirectX 11 games that make use of Hyperthreading like FC3 can reveal stability problems with overclocks that other games will not.
After removing any overclocks, perform a clean install of your GPU drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller[www.guru3d.com] in safe mode. Ensure you're using the latest drivers from Nvidia.
Occasionally, Steam will fail to install the required redistributables when you first run a game. And sometimes, during a long download, a file may become corrupted.
To solve those two problems, verify your file cache from the game's properties menu in Steam, wait for it to finish, then navigate to the support folder in your Far Cry 3 directory. From there, reinstall DirectX, Visual C and .NET runtimes. Select repair install if asked, then try to run the game again.
If it still doesn't work, navigate to your config file located in Documents/My games/Far Cry 3. Open GamerProfile.xml with Notepad and find the line that says, "UseD3D11=1" Change the 1 to a 0, save the file and then try to start the game again. If the game starts, you can re enable DirectX 11 from the game's option menu if needed.
Also, what about overlays? Are you using any overlays like MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision? What about the Steam and Uplay overlay? If multiple overlays are attempting to hook into FC3, it can certainly cause problems. Try disabling all of them.
