Reflex or Red Dot Sight?

I prefer reflex on my smg and red dot on my assault rifle.

Well, it's really a matter of personal preference, I prefer the Red Dot Sight myself for most weapons.

The illuminated aiming reticle of both of those sights is way way too bright and bloomy. It actually gets in the way of seeing your target clearly and this should have been noticed by the devs and then fixed. Because of this I personally prefer iron sights but of course the upgraded sights improve the weapon's accuracy. So, yeah. Another example of flawed design - they give us an improvement to the game and then they ruin it through careless implementation.

Are there any mods that dim (or replace) the aiming reticle on the red dot and reflex sights?

I normally use the red dot myself becaue the reflex kinda blocks the target making it hard to see or be specific where you aim (i.e. head shot). But yeah i agree with the ^ the sites can block views of the target, even if you're like me and spam the spot key. For the ACE and the AK i use iron sights and have no problem whatsoever.

Do you know if there is an updated version of khenaz's better sights mod floating around anywhere? I looked into Ziggy's mod because it uses an updated version of the better sights mod BUT it makes a lot of changes to the game that I don't want and also I would be forced to restart my game if I installed Ziggy's.

My problem with red dot, reflex, even the optical sights on anything but the sniper rifle and bow is they all make it too DARK in-game. Even in daylight there's a noticeable difference and it becomes more difficult to discern targets. In the jungle it's almost impossible to track a moving target. With real reflex sights and red dots, the issue doesn't exists. I've never put an optical sight on a real LMG (other than night vision), so I can't speak for that.
