make sure you have installed the updated version of the Uplay Client ... you can get it here
https://uplay.ubi.com
the version of Uplay that ships with the game from Steam may be out of date
also Uplay likes to be on the same hard drive as your Operating System .. i have Uplay installed to my C: drive
c :program files X 86 \ ubisoft \ ubisoft game launcher
and Far Cry 3 is installed on my E: drive with my steam games
E : program files X 86 \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ far cry 3
i use windows 10 and it works fine
if so why are you installing the Steam version >?
of course it will want to redownload the game , Steam puts the files in a differnt folder then the Uplay only version uses
Steam did this to add their OWN DRM to the game and force users to only buy DLC from Steam
see this thread (it may help)
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1302981-New-Uplay-FC3-no-longer-loads?s=042d2a1b132dad2bb36c6bac5d94b607
I own the game on steam and uplay. I just installed it on steam because I like it to play there - also because of the hour counter. As I already said - I copy'n'pasted the data already and it didn't work.
This didn't happen with AC II though. Just needed to install the data through steam and it worked well with Uplay - without re-downloading it there.
If they put it in a different folder - can someone tell me the path where I have to put the data in?
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1302981-New-Uplay-FC3-no-longer-loads?p=11099322&viewfull=1#post11099322
it clearly says
Hi, Far Cry 3 previously used the old installation method, using a traditional setup.exe but has now been updated to use the new technology method as listed here
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1212485
again the steam version and the stand alone Uplay only version install to seperate locations and the game will only work when installed to those locations
simply copying and pasting the files does not change the INI files ..to do that yes you will have to re download the game again
with the Steam version you must have both Uplay and Steam open ..this does not work the same as the Uplay only version ..with that version you only need uplay open and the games files install to a differnt directory with differnt settings in the INI files
and yes Steam ADDED its own DRM to this game and changed the file structure of the game to benift Steam and force users to only buy DLC on Steam
Ubisoft also has updated the way the game installs with uplay only version months ago

I know that I have to have Uplay and steam open. I am not a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥ who has no knowledge about this stuff.
"again the steam version and the stand alone Uplay only version install to seperate locations"
No ♥♥♥♥ sherlock, steam installs it in steam common apps and uplay in their own game folder. Thats why I simply tried copy'n'paste. As you wrote, won't work with different .inis.
Pardon me, I don't want to be rude you're just trying to help. I really appreciate that. Anyway, you're solutions won't help me out with that problem.
To solve this I will just install the uplay version and leave the steam version out of my mind.
If someone else has a solution, feel free to write here.
@Mac:
I bought the steam version in the last sale, but had the uplay version already. Now uplay won't recognize the data through steam when you hit the "play" button as it would do like in every other Ubisoft game. Uplay wants to redownload 10 gigs of game data. Hoped there would be a simple way to find a solution to this.
Just buy it on uplay Mac, that will solve every problem you might have with this. *lol*
yes if you have the Uplay only version of the game USE that one ..as you can not install two versions of the same product and not expect it to go in a seperate folder and yes it will want to download an install since the two versions are different due to Steam changing the game and enforce it OWN DRM into the game so it can get more cash per sale ...
the default DRM for this game is UPLAY not STEAM
EXAMPLE useing Far Cry 4 ..
1.if you buy the DVD version of the game it has 1 DRM ... UPLAY... no Steam involved
2.if you buy the game on AMAZON it has 1 DRM ... UPLAY.... no Steam involved
3.if you buy it direct from UBISOFT it has 1 DRM .. UPLAY ...no Steam involved
4.if you buy the game on greenman gameing it has 1 DRM .. UPLAY ....no Steam involved
5.if you buy the game on get games go it has 1 DRM ... UPLAY .. no Steam involved
6.if you buy the game on newegg it has 1 DRM ..UPLAY ...no Steam invloved
7.if you buy the game on gamers gate it has 1 DRM ... Uplay ...no Steam involved
if you buy it on Steam your forced into..2 DRM's - Steam + Uplay as your DRM's as both clients must be open to run the game
the Steam version will also require that yes you download and install their own version
the two are not inter-changable ..and to get any DLC to work with Far Cry 4 you MUST buy it on Steam ..
and yet everyone blames Uplay for the greed that Steam uses by enforceing a new DRM and says on the store page that uplay is the added DRM .. when in Fact Steam is the Added DRM ..for both Far Cry 3 and 4 and changes the default installation directorys ..in an effort to generate income by only letting the user purchase DLC from Steam at an inflated price
Just buy it on uplay Mac, that will solve every problem you might have with this. *lol* [/quote]
cant find farcry 3 on uplay shop anymore, ubisoft doesnt have their own game

@Mac:
Thats strange. Where do you live? Try to buy it through a keysite?
On an older account I don't need to redownload everything again - it just starts through the uplayclient while installed in steam.
So, no worries about that anymore. :)
