activating skill points how to??

I am new to the game and so far have accumulated 7 skill points but haven't the slightest
idea how to activate them so I can actually use them in the game. Would someone PLEASE
instruct me how to make skill points work that you have already?

It's in the pause menu, hit Esc, select the option saying Skills, and you'll be able to spend your points in any of the 3 trees. But keep in mind a lot of skills are locked behind story progression, or small challenges

Double click on them, if that isn't clear. I don't think it's ever actually explained in the tutorial and there are buttons for everything else (which you can also do by double clicking). The UI in this game is probably the worst I've encountered.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me on this. Demisync though I do NOT know how to get to the Pause menu. Do I find it after it hit my Esc key or how? Sorry for being so dumb about this.

Escape key (Esc), and at the top it says "Skills" (if you've previously loaded a save). Or you can use the function key shortcuts F1-F5. I think F2 brings up the skills menu.
