Changed to DirectX 9, didn't work. DirectX 9 + all graphics settings low, didn't work. DirectX 9 + all low + low resolution + windowed or borderless + FPS cap, didn't work. Abandoned the mission then changed all equipped weapons to the most basic ones, didn't work.
The only thing worked for me was to delete my savegame completely, then start a new game. I also removed a mod I was using, called the easy start mod that unlocks all weapons, skills, crafting recipes from the start, idk if that's what fixed it. Anyway, a fresh new save without that mod allowed me to beat the doppelganger mission without crash.
This seems to be entirely luck based. When playing this mission, anyone has an approximately 1% chance of encountering this bug, some mods like the one I mentioned may increase this chance. It is also tied to your savefile so once it happens, your savegame is just screwed, you have to start a fresh new game and prey that it doesn't happen again.
