I have returned to this game in the last few days after leaving it a few months to allow for bug fixes and updates. I'm therefore very disappointed to note that the bug that sometimes won't allow you to pick up flat metal plates from the floor is still there. I started a new play through and on the very first ship i tried i had more than 10 plates that i couldn't pick up until such time as i'd dismantled the infrastructure beneath them. This is a core mechanic to to still not have this working as intended after such a long time is very very disappointing. Game uninstalled again and I may revisit it at a later date.

A real interesting and fun concept. However riddled with game breaking and fun reducing bugs. When you can complete a whole ship without major bugs I will reconsider.

Another 6h spent, now with Beta-branch.
Which states; "The ship collapse and physics system have undergone a thorough rework".
However - connectors are still broken. The result is "locked" ship sections that can't be demolished.

This is an enormous step up from the first game. We can dismantle entire ships down the the very shell, then crane those bulky hull parts away for even more scrap. Swinging the hammer at the rivets and sawing the connection points feels very cathartic and the ships look great. In addition, the progression feels good: money you get allows you to buy bigger and better ships to dismantle and alongside the different material types you salvage affords you new upgrades to all your dismantling tools.

The game definitely feels on a budget though and lacking in areas outside the ship dismantling. There are certainly janky parts to the game in both design and execution: some tools are almost entirely useless: Explosives do almost nothing and the mobile delivery crate is actively harmful, while the recycling minigame is one of the most out of place I've ever seen in a game. It also feels like there is a lot of unrealised opportunity. After a while you are swimming in scrap and money with nothing to use it on. It would have been nice to see more of the upgrades for our Bangladeshi waterfront that we saw in the first game: upgrading some of the buildings and hiring the local talent.

That said, we're here for the ship breaking and it feels so damn good. Hardspace Shipbreaker is the superior game in terms of pure gameplay, but if you want the zen experience of disassembling a huge ship without the forced dialogue and mandatory union signups, then Ship Graveyard Sim 2 is the superior game overall.

I originally had a positive and optimistic review, but after further play I've changed it to negative. I've completely had it with this game. The ships aren't held together consistently whatsoever. You will end up with floating parts. Ship hulls held in place by pieces that aren't even touching. I have screenshots to prove it.

Go play Hardspace: Shipbreaker instead. This game is an exercise in frustration.

The thing you must keep in mind when evaluating this game is what you're looking for going in and how this game compares to other titles in publisher PlayWay's library and to the first game in this series.

Ship Graveyard Simulator 2 is a salvage game, where you are dropped into a shipyard, given a set of tools, and must scrap parts of or entire naval vessels however you please, be it systematically or chaotically. Compared to the first game, this title is vastly improved by allowing modular destruction of ships. For that alone it is praiseworthy, but it shares many of the similar qualities with regards to how the game plays and what some might criticize it for: repetition, tedium, lack of variety in environments.

Ships are assembled like legos instead of other destruction titles that tout voxels or other granular destruction elements. In fact this game shares a lot with the Gold Standard in this genre, Hardspace: Shipbreaker. Not a bad title to take inspiration from. The loop involves destroying parts of the ship, gathering up the pieces, and chucking them into your truck (with infinite capacity, thankfully), and eventually carting off to be sorted (in a very simple minigame) and either sold or used to upgrade your tools. This is peak Dad Game that may turn off players looking for a bit more stimulation in their gameplay.

Ships gradually increase in size and complexity but I noticed that there was a lot of repetition in design, particularly noticeable at the end of the first tier of ships, where large objects are placed in similar situations and use similar tactics to free up. A path for a crane must be cleared to haul these large objects out, which is a nice touch, but I wonder how necessary this is or whether levels would be more expediently completed with the strategy below.

After you've cleared a path and gotten everything of value out of the ships, a familiar pattern sets in where you try to use the game's logic to isolate the destructible walls & floors from the ship superstructure so that everything falls apart by itself. Several minutes spent gathering and chucking into your truck results, which can get tedious. It is still a nice feeling to not only slowly tear apart the ships and see your work in real time, but to be able to use the crane to haul off the ship superstructure, like cleaning your plate of food.

The tools themselves are improved. Upgrades change the game from taking some effort to peel off walls and slice through junctures into Rip n' Tear in terms of efficacy and speed. I was better able to get into the flow of it once I could one-shot studs with my hammer and use the saw with minimal cutting speed. Crucially, a grappling-hook style rope was added from the demo that aids in traversal. While it doesn't always work great, the fact that it's there was welcome.

All in all, for the price I paid for it and compared to its predecessor, this title is a huge step forward and is one of the better titles in PlayWay's catalog in terms of polish and stability. It does have bugs but mainly to do with the physics causing objects to float in the air or elements not destroying when they should. There was a temporary loss of using my tools that I was able to figure out how to fix on my own.

As long as you know what you are buying and don't mind these type of games, I definitely recommend it. It's no Hardspace: Shipbreaker, but even Hardspace, for all its polish, had significant issues and a controversial development cycle with similar constrained variety, and not many of these type of niche games are being made.

It's no Hardspace, but it scratches the itch for dismantling things. Physics sometimes are a bit wonky and is serviceable. Upgrades comes quickly and it's enough to get your through early ships without having to grind a lot. Mini game is there to break the monotony, unfortunately it is out of place. If you want a chill game without too much of a fuss for a few hours, it's not a bad little title.

This is a tough game to review. On the one hand, I've sank 55 hours in to it and will probably add to that. On the other hand, it's a buggy mess.

There was a major update this week and I wanted to see if that fixed the issues that I was having. It didn't.
I'm still seeing ships spawn with no 'coupler' so I cannot blow-torch the sections apart, and I'm currently trying to dismantle a few completely floating storeys of the boat's living quarters.
I've also lost two crates (there's nowhere left to hide!), necessary for completing a contract, so I'll probably have to start this one again.

Just because something's addictive, it doesn't make it good. I'm addicted to dismantling ships and getting frustrated in the process.

Wow, somehow they manage to make it actually worse than the first game. The first Ship Graveyard Simulator was not an ideal game, but it was fun to scrap stuff from ship carcasses. Here? Not so much. Sure, you can actually destroy hulls now, the graphics is a bit prettier and you get ability to jump around. That is all that good here. In the first game, when you hit things you supposed to hit - they were deforming, when you cut things you were allowed to cut - you see animation of cutting and then the cut itself. And if you cut it in a wrong place you will get leftovers you will have to cut again if you want more materials. In this game? You hit point and it simply change color to black. You cut something - you see animation of tool working and then, guess what, part lose color. Not cuts, no deformation, just change of color. And there is literally no connection between the tool and the materials. You see animation of tool in the air and the part you were destroying lose color. Then, when you decolor all the connection you "bonk" the part with your hammer (actual in-game name of the action) and it becomes disconnected. You are free to press the button and pack whatever that was into small box in your hands and to throw it to your track. And as long as you point in the right direction - it does not matter how far away your truck is. It does make cleaning the place much faster, but with how small immersion is there already it just make the feeling of the game even worse.
But while immersion is the main thing in the simulators, there are more downgrades from the first game. Another big thing that was watered down is progression. Previously there were experience you get from using tools, fulfilling contracts and making money. When you leveled up you get skill points you were able to use in simple and straightforward skill tree, separate for each tool. And available ships were unlocked based on your level - there was a goal to work towards. Now? No experience, no unlocks. As long as you have enough money you can order any ship. But there are even more. In the first game there was a progression for facilities. And when you get a new level you unlock more options and the facility get a visual upgrade. Not anymore, everything is at the max level already as far as I can tell. You can still upgrade tools and now there are one or two more levels of them, though. Oh, and in the first game there were a progress bar for ship demolition. It was satisfying to hit 100% knowing that you actually did everything. And you get a nice change of background color from red to green in the ship booking system when you get at least 90% of the ship disassembled. Not anymore. And, unless it will unlock at some arbitrary point in the future, the hiring workers system is gone too. As well as making advanced materials on your own. Now all you need to upgrade your tools you can only get from the ship. Only tools upgrades can be crafted. And it looks like you don't even need to upgrade tools to destroy advanced points, you can do it with anything. meaning that another progression system was scrapped.
And on top of that I get 2 crushes to desktop in less than one hour here. In the first game I did not get a single one in several hours.
Someone in upvoted revies for this game compared it to Hardspace: shipbreaker. The only similarity is that you can completely disassemble something called "ship". Every other part of this game is objectively less developed. There is no story, no characters, no material deformation, no goal, no challenge. The only thing in the SGS2 that required at least some thinking is how to get "heavy equipement" out before you can destroy its supports.
I would advice to stay away from this title unless some significant game mechanics will be added.
