Top down approach or floors first?
Curious what the better system is for breaking down the ship (after getting all lootables and crane pickups).

1) Top down - work from top, breakdown each floor one by one until you reach bottom.,

2) Destroy bottom bottom supports and floors to make the whole thing crumble down.

Or is there a different strategy that is best?

I usually clear all the connections to the hull pieces and mid section separators. then work from the bottom up to destroy the outermost walls.

at some point the whole ship collapses into itself.

from there its just grab everything and throw it into the truck.

Early ships, the Floors First approach works fairly well. As you progress, the ships start having "Heavy Elements" (AKA big pallets or massive equipment that the crane has to lift out) and various still-active systems (electricity, fuel, steam) that you have to systematically disarm to unlock more areas of the ship (Electricity prevents destruction of metal components; Steam blocks movement through areas with broken pipes until the heater is turned off; Fuel WILL EXPLODE if you cut a fuel pipe WITHOUT closing the valve on the fuel tank, so if you see a fuel pipe suddenly start burning, IMMEDIATELY BREAK THROUGH ANY BARRIERS BETWEEN YOU AND THE TANK).

However, if you want to make money, the fastest thing to do is to complete all the contracts of the ship (and possibly the collectible as well) and scrap the ship.

Run round and collect all breakables, then i just collapse everything into one big pile and sit there digging through it for an hour.

Usually I complete all contracts, get all the heavy stuff out, and then go around all the edges and the ship will collapse in on itself. Last bit is just picking up all the materials and the hull.

Exactly how I do it too. Though, my main focus early on is to clear a central path from ground floor to sky so I have no ceilings blocking my tosses to the truck to make all of the early gas/electrical and easy trash excavation easier.

Do you lose any material when you collapse it this way?

Nope, as long as there's no "heavy elements" you don't lose anything. (Tho I've heard that the collectible can despawn if it drops - haven't confirmed myself)

I had the Big Chungus collectible respawn after loading a save where I had already removed the bow of the ship, and it just fell into the dirt without any problem.

Rather than the collectible despawning, it might just have wonky collision when falling and phase into something else in such a way that it's near impossible to locate. So you potentially MIGHT be able to grab it after the floors collapse, but for consistency's sake, if you know where the collectible is, it would probably be better to just grab it beforehand so that you don't have to look for the tiny piece of loot in a giant pile of scrap and debris.
