a question about efficiency
I just started playing the game, and from what i found in the first job, it seems like it's most efficient to just break the floor so everything falls apart?
Are there any downsides to doing this?

If you discovered that soon after you started playing, you are doing it right. Well done.

There are no downsides. There are also other things like that, though some of them can't be used in combination, so you have to pick one or the other.

One big 'downside' is that you may break heavy structures by doing so. You'll encounter them later in the game. That's what the crane is used for.

Else it's gonna save you a lot of time

Later ships have objects on upper floors that need a crane to remove them intact after clearing away anything above them.

If you break the floor under those object they are lost, and they often are required to fulfill contracts
Also, keep in mind, that early ships rarely have full hulls, meaning that your salvage, once dropped, might get launched pretty far away, making collection a pain in the neck.

And don't forget to collect everything movable from the floors BEFORE you collapse them, because sometimes crap still falls through the floor, and if you miss a contract on a big ship because it fell, you're going to be pissed.

(Also do not use the mobile containers for the exact same reason, you got a ludicrous launch range on the throw for a reason!)

Also, when i've crashed quite big part of Kursk, there were so many parts that it kept crashing my game. So be aware of it (and i've got i7 13k and 32 GB of RAM)

thanks for all the tips and for answering my question everyone!
What i like to do is first go through the ship and grab all the loose stuff on the walls and floors. makes it easier to break later without clutter in the way. then i like to scout where all the crane items are. then just break all the walls on the topmost floor with a crane item on it till everything above collapses. collect all the debris and then crane out the items. Then look for the next crane item and repeat the process. Be warned there is one ship in I want to say the floating cities dlc (its the one with the oil ship) where there are like 8 crane items on the very bottom floor and that floor is supported by the floor 2 levels up. So when you disconnected the floor from the hull 2 levels up it breaks all the crane item. If you notice the message crane item destroyed immediately go to main menu without saving and load in. Unless you are really unlucky the auto save will be from a few minutes prior to the drop.

Or just making manual saves from time to time...
But the autosaves won't be overwritten, new saves are created if the next autosave comes.

Elements used to fly all over the place at great force, leading to a bunch of I-beams of all sizes scattered across the dock. But that's in the old version, in the current version that problem doesn't happen anymore, everything just drops straight down.

You can't really make use of the truck all the time, on bigger and taller ships you won't always be able to see where the truck is (or remember where), especially when you're deep into the ship without the means to reach the outside.

One thing you should be careful with is placing the mobile crane, if you have to place more than one, be sure to space them out, don't place them too close to each other or they may accidentally get stuck together, by then not only can you not take them away by crane because they're blocking each other, but they also form a load bearing support that prevents their nearby hull from being lifted.

In theory, collapsing more than one floor is a very fast way to break down a ship, but due to the buggy nature of the engine, often time some elements will get stuck in mid air (like a sink or cabinet for example) Now, if you only took down one floor when this happens you can still grab them with assisted jumps from solid objects and height, but that's no longer an option if you're 2 floors deeper (the grappling hook is still an option, but it becomes very tedious as you grab the floating elements while falling) It's up to you, but I don't recommend collapsing more than 2 floors, the cleanup when things are floating in midair is no fun.
