DO NOT download the new 1.03 patch! Wait for another update
Just trying to save folks some time. The new 1.03 patch practically breaks the game by not allowing you to pick up many items. Wait until they fix it. You can see proof in all the below topics.

EDIT: The 1.03 hotfix is out and it helps to an extent. There are still issues picking up some items and you have to move around a lot and/or knock down another item near it to pick some stuff up (steel girders between walls seem especially cranky now).

Also I'm not thrilled with the big slowdown of the tools in the bigger ships. I just bought the $1200 ship and the tools are painfully slow. Was it the update or is it normal with the bigger ships?

I want to clarify the OP here, since it's ambiguous. For me, this patch stops me from picking up some items. For about half these items, moving around and looking at the item from another angle fixes the problem. But for the rest I can't find any angle that works.

To pick up the item, assuming you have a glove upgrade, find another item nearby, then pick an angle where you can see both items and pick up the other item.

Hence why I said "many items" and not all items. That trick works if there are other objects nearby, but not always. I now have about 20 items laying around that can't be picked up because they're laying flat and no other object is nearby. I now get to sit and wait for another update before I can pick up all the items again. My post was meant to warn folks that the 1.03 update will make for more frustrations than it fixed.

This was normal. The update actually sped up a few of the tools, but not by a lot that I can tell. As you go up in difficulty on ships, it pretty much cuts the tool speed by about 66%. I started at the first ship and worked my way up one by one, and now I'm on the last ship and the I'm one-hitting the tools again.

realistically all you need to do is max the hammer and grinder to lvl 10 since most of the other tools are used rarely ( carry capacity also useful

I mean, for me, the patch is causing me to crash frequently. Lol. That's just me, though.

Normally I'd advise someone to make sure their graphics drivers are up-to-date. But judging by your handle you play a lot of games and know that.

I found out you can pick most of the bugged items if you are mid jump.

This did not work for me, but kudos for making me jump around like a lunatic for a good 30 seconds.

I have the same problem, very annoying.

I found something very strange. I had an object I couldn't pick up because of this bug. I had tried it from many angles. I went off and did other things on the ship, but nothing nearby or over that object. Then I came back to it and found I could pick it up. Something I had done far away changed the situation.

The game is unplayable. When you get to the bigger ships nothing works right. The torch glitches out and then the sound gets stuck. The walls are floating in the air and you can't get to them. I had 5 sets of walls just floating in the air. Also the crane can't get to something that is clearly wide open and accessible. Also ran into this bug where you can't pick up anything. This needs a lot of work and it seems to only be getting worse.

Three of those points suggest that you aren't being careful enough to fully disassemble a level before moving down to the level below it.

They are floating in the air. There are no points. The algorithm is broken. Nothing should float in mid air.

For a non-programmer like me it sounds like an easy task:
Check if you as a part are connected to a hard point
- if not check if any of your neighbors is connected to a hard point
- let the neighbors check that as well
- if no piece is connectec to a hard point: Collapse
