All the tools are like that. 3 levels of ships and you need upgraded tools to be effective on the more difficult ships. Non-upgraded tools still work, but they take FOREVER to get the job done.
And a streamer will make a YouTube video with the headline "Can I disassemble the largest ship with no tools upgraded?!"
It's a game. Get over it.
There is some complexity involved in the higher-class ships but nothing too extreme. Just more materials and higher-paying contracts that will help you max out your tools, although I am finding myself extremely tight on cash even when completing everything.
Prioritize upgrading your hammer and saw. The torch is used a fraction of the time compared to the others.
Upgrading gloves lets you pick up so far up to 3 items at a time and up how fast you pick up materials, so getting them to level 5 is worth it, but only after you've upgraded your Hammer and Saw significantly. Torch is primarily only used when you've already parted out most of the ship and its getting time to crane-lift sections of the hull, so to me its not worth taking past level 5.
The bar for logical / realism is so low here that the concerns you are raising are microscopic compared to the other game's issues.
