Half-Life 2 - Story explained.

Can someone please explain the Half-Life series to me, including Black Mesa. I'm trying to understand it bit by bit but I think I learned nothing. Please explain it

In the Black Mesa Facility located in the offskirts of the New Mexaco, the tardy Gordon Freeman who is a phycist recently employed there is late for an experiment regarding a 'strange' crystal artefact.

It is bought through the means of a 'GMAN' an interdimensional being knowing your every move during the games progress. When Gordon reaches the lockers room, he puts on his HEV MARK IV Suit designed to protect him from biotoxins and radiation.

He reaches his destination, which is the testing area where the Mass Spectrometer is held - the administrator (Dr. Breen) delivers the artefact into the mass spectrometer which causes a cataclysmic failure and causes a rip in the definitive space of time - which Gordon is in.

Gordon is inevitably witnesses the unseen, a border world called 'Xen' and the trapped, servant race called the Vortigaunts. He eventually returns from the Resonance Cascade and sees the Black Mesa facility destroyed and partly in ruins.

However he battles through many foes, including secret services like the black ops and the deployed HECU (Hazardous Enivroments Combat Unit) and is trapped once by them.

Learning eventually, he goes to the Lambda Complex, where the secret projects are held because of the teleporter.

3 Scientists are there and help Gordon to activate the coolants and activate the generator for the teleporter which lunges him into the border world Xen this time, albiet more permanently.

Gordon kills the Nihilanth which is the co-ruler of the Xen world. GMAN thanks him and is put stasis for later use.

Thats the story of the first.

In the second, Gordon awakens from stasis to be greeted with the GMAN's offer 'Your time has come again' without explict details on what he is dealing with. Gordon is now teleported in time to where City 17 is - the year is 202x. A lot is not known about the current time in the series, only that the combine captured the world within 6 hours and given Dr. Breen, the Black Mesa administrator the rights to the world to control it. The combine have employed an incredibly facist regime, capturing and modifying live human subjects called the Stalkers. The combine themsleves are modified and are part human and alien. The metrocops are not.

Gordon gets off the train and meets the soon-to-be Rebels, who warn Gordon about the 'water' that makes them 'forget' from the vending machines (DR>Breens Private Reserve), he arrives at an interrogation with a metrocop who takes off his mask only to reveal its BARNEY Calhoun (pardon the spelling) who tells him to meet with Dr.Kleiner.

Gordon escapes possible persecution from the combine and finally finds Dr.Kleiner and meets old friends and new alike, including Dr. Eli, who was Gordon's friend and survived during the resonance cascade and knows of the GMANs doings, and his daughter Alyx whom saves you from the confines of the combine and debriefs you on what happens.

They tell you to put on the HEV Suit and try to teleport you away but it fails, causing Gordon to escape to a multitude of locations such as Nova Prospekt (a derelict prison), Ravenholm (which is a bombed area), Gordon also destroys certain key points like Combine bases and helps the Rebels.

Eventually Gordon Freeman reaches the Citadel which is a brooding, soaring skyscraper and central location of the combine and finds Dr. Breen and Mossman. Dr. Breen at this point has captured Eli and Alyx, Dr.Breen mentions Alyx's mother whom is supposedly passed away during the events of the six hour war and she spits at him in contempt. When facing Gordon, the player who has to put himself in one the stalker pods - Dr. Breen tells Gordon that his offer was 'of the highest bidder' and trying to get Gordon to side with him.

During the conversation Dr. Mossman betrays Dr.Breen and hacks the interface with the EMP tool Alyx has and locks the door, causing Dr.Breen to use the gravity gun on alyx, you, eli and mossman. He dashes for the teleporter and mentions about using a host body. Alyx and Gordon are too late to get him. So what does Gordon freeman do? He scales the teleporters lifts and fights elite combine and destroys the teleporter causing a singularity and exploding the citadel - with only GMAN to intervene and stop time thus saving you until the vortigaunts teleport you away.

Since the Combine Overworld can't support human life, one of the Advisors suggested that Breen could transplant his mind or something into an Advisor.
