Lost Coast isn't canon, so really you don't have to play it at all.

lost coast isn't really a half-life game its more of a demonstration of how half-life works it has commentary explaining how half-life 2 new source engine etc. I know because when I bought Counter strike source I got half-life2:lost coast only with half-life1:death match & I completed the demo in like 1 hour or less but it was fun anyway.

I actually play Lost Coast in between Highway 17 and Sandtraps. In fact, Lost Coast was a deleted Half-Life 2 coast map which would have broken up the zombie tunnel section as Lost Coast would have taken place in between the end of Highway 17 (d2_coast_07) and the start of Sandtraps (d2_coast_09).

Half-Life 2 Lost Coast has nothing to do with the Half-Life story. It's just a short HDR demonstration. Basically, a tech demo.
