DirectX issues with HL2,EP,EP2,CSS
Yerstoday, i had upgraded my gpu to GT 640 2GB. Now once i start playing half life 2 or anyother source game other than TF2, it auto sets my game with DirectX 8.0. Now, before that i didn't had this problem with my old GPU (GT 440 is someones interested in info). it always and was DirectX 9+. Anyway.. Does anyone knows how to fix this issue? or is it has something to do with my new GPU?

Now that it runs on DirectX 8. The graphics became really crappy the sided of obejcts ingame are acting really choppy and some settings are capped.

-- Thanks for the information guys. now that i know what's the cause of this issue. And i'm glad to find out it's not only me, nor is it my new GPU. hope they'll fix this soon on Steampipe. Though, kinda hoping it's actually true and it is trough Steampipe.

There is a function in these games that auto detects the graphics Direct x Settings. This is broken in the current version for high end graphics cards unfortunately.
Try subscribing to the Steampipe-Beta version of HL2, as that is where the fix will be implemented first.

When i force the game into DX 9 via the console, i get black and purple checkboard across the screen and this error message in the console "Material dev/motion_blur has bad reference count 0 when being bound"

use +mat_dxlevel 95 instead of +dxlevel 95 - it should work better (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Mat_dxlevel).
quote "This can also be specified with Launch Options, use +mat_dxlevel [DirectX version] on the launch options of any Source game to do so. Alternatively, you can use -dxlevel [DirectX version], however this specifies a number of extra presets, including resolution and quality."

edite: don´t use 98 (shader 4) - there are issues with that setting.

Can you elaborate on this ? I started HL2 with the -dxlevel 98 once, exited, removed the launch parameter, started again, and now it stay on Hardware Level DirectX 9.8, and I didn't see anything wrong.

for example, it will change to dx 7 after a level change - so for me. With 95 it remains in dx9+ and the shadows on high, etc.

Oh. I might not have the same issue as you then. After I forced it with the command line once, it stay on 9.8 all the time.

I have a Windows XP, and every time I'm trying to launch my HL2 EP2, it says ''Auto Adjusting'', I hear the logo sound, it bugs, and crashes. Can it be fix?
