HL1 is much less of a chore to play than HL2 though for me.
Half-Life's more fast paced nature and Quake-like mechanisms makes it a lot more fun and engaging from a gameplay perspective, but it's hard to really get immersed in the story due to the game's age and some of the more ridiculous designs (a giant set of fan blades in a giant chasm? really?)
Black Mesa's gameplay design is kind of clunky (why do the grenades get thrown from so far above the player's POV? realism? that's not an excuse when that makes it impossible to aim with the damn things) but it effectively gives the feeling that you're genuinely in the middle of an attack and trying to escape; the situation feels authentic.
My heart belongs to Half-Life though. The emphasis of a video game, first and foremost, should be the gameplay.
I respectfully disagree. The fact that you are only in two locations in HL1 makes it less diverse straight away. HL1 has three more weapons than HL2, so not exactly way more. I counted 19 enemies in HL2, not including things like turrets or scanners, HL1 I got 22, also not counting things like tripmines and mantas, so I don't know why people say there are loads more in HL1.
HL 1 has 14 weapons while HL 2 has 11 which would have been fine if they tried to compensate for the lack of weapons by making those 11 weapons more diverse in general but they didnt you, only have the grav gun and the pulse rifle which are cool but thats all there is as far as interesting weapons.
HL1 has pretty good enemy variety and they are all very fun to fight but HL2 has very piss poor enemy variety and they arent as fun as HL1's enemies. in hl2 you have 3 different zombie and headcrab variants (4 if you count the combine zombies from ep1), 2 different types of antlions (3 if you count the drones from ep2), combine soldiers (who arent as fun to fight as the marines),man hacks, turrets, barnacles, striders, leeches and gunships (and hunters if you count ep2), i think the real problem with HL2's enemies is that they are just variants of already existing enemies while in hl1 there was not a single enemy that was a variant of another.
I really like the vehicle sections. I love the fact the fact in some cases that you can stop, explore and find extra things, or just bypass them completely.
they really should've left the cremators, bullsquids, and houndeyes in the final build of HL2
