Having said that, you kinda sorta don't technically need to play HL1 before HL2. The continuity isn't all that great going from the first to the second, but then that's sorta how the HL story works...non-continuity. Even still, I'd recommend playing the first all the way through as you'll be better able to understand the beginning of HL2 and maybe, possibly why/how you came to be there.
After that you can walkthrough Black Mesa, as it's extremely great and immersive experience. For me it will actually replace HL 1. Unfortunately, the last part of the game is yet to be released.
And only after that you can start playing HL2 and its episodes. You might want to grab HL2 Update 2.0 from Steam forum thread (3.0 is yet to be released)
And after taht you might want to try HL: Blue Shift and HL: Opposing Force. But these are optional.
