the only thing i can think at this moment is that it could be the NVidia app. i've been hearing recently that the app is making a lot of games crash and people recommend just manually updating your GPU drivers from their site. though i haven't heard anything about whether you can just end task it in task manager, or if you have to uninstall it entirely for it to stop interfering with games. that said, i can't say that i've had this issue with Half-Life 2 before either the anniversary update, nor the update to NVidia app that's causing issues with other games. but i'm leaning more towards whatever update Valve made to HL2 because I wasn't even running NVidia in my task manager when i was having all the same issues as everyone else.
Ok, so, running the game in fullscreen, it crashes and blacks the screen out completely.
Playing borderless and windowed will give you an actual error message when it crashes instead of forcing you to use task manager just to close HL2.
The error message in question is:
Too many indices for index buffer.
Long story short, if you're getting this message, you're gonna have to uninstall some mods, because it just means there's an excess of indices that HL2's array(s) aren't capable of handling. I don't know, man; I'm not a programmer.
The pack that caused this error for me was running Juniez Weapon Models alongside HL:A model Combine Soldiers. Because they're too high resolution, the game literally crashes every single time I get into a gunfight.
I ran the game for a solid hour or two without any crashes.
It’s definitely not a mod related issue, at least not the freezing and crashing issues that this thread is about. I don’t have any mods because I wanted my first playthrough to be vanilla.
