Black Mesa is an alternative, not really the authentic experience of HL1 but it has all the same story and plays mostly like HL2.
In HL2 the Earth has been taken over by aliens and you are re-awakened by the Gman years after the war with the aliens has ended.
It's worth reading up about some of the deeper lore because the game's story doesn't explain everything and it's a pretty cool read as well.
Also there is Black Mesa, which is really harder
I love HL1 but I can't recommend it since you are already hesitant due to how dated the visuals look.
Can't recommend Black Mesa either because I think the gameplay is worse and it isn't really faithful to the original.
If you really can't bite the bullet and play HL1 (which I understand), then watching a short summary of events should be enough. It won't have the same impact going from HL1 to HL2 but you already spoiled yourself and it's not that big of a deal anyway. HL1 is basically one big survival scenario with mystery sprinkled on top. It's not like HL2 where you have named characters being your buddies.
