Can't start Episode 1 or 2
When starting this new version of Half-Life 2, I can't start Episode 1 or 2. I got my copy of HL2 quite some time ago (maybe from a disc), and had Lost Coast somehow. Even though I got this episode with no problem, the episodes won't start at all. It looks like they're loading for a split second, then bump me back to the menu for the episode.

I've tried:
Uninstalling the game and reinstalling.
Deleting all old HL2 files.
Clearing download cache.

I'm just not sure how to get these games running.

Edit (FIXED): Okay, I got this issue resolved. What you all need to do if you're having this issue is to put in a support ticket. Make sure to get screenshots of any crash messages (I used Greenshot for stuff like this, since it's a Windows error message on my end), and add the crash error as an attachment. Be very clear that you purchased Half-Life 2, but did not purchase Episodes 1 and/or 2. This is basically a licensing issue. They will give you a link to add the licenses for the missing games. This will trigger a download, and you should be able to play after that.

I was having this issue yesterday but now I can't run the game at all. It says there's no permission to run the episodes or something like that.

Well, my Ep2 simply wouldnt download it seems, so this is why the game cant find those model files. There is an Ep2 folder, which is almost empty, with a save folder in it, and a 49 bytes file in that folder. My whole installation is 6.51 GB/6.999.383.083 bytes

Theres a folder called "episodic" too in the Half-life 2 folder, which apparanetly Ep 1, and is about 1GB

Disc and disk aren't the same thing. Check steamapps/common/Half-Life 2/ FFS.
you learn how to talk to people, saying it once

no, the whole package is 10 GB
what you want to do is go to your Library, start typing in Half-Life 2, and install either Ep1, Ep2 or both from the appearing Tools section. this method solved my problem, where Ep2 was simply missing from my installation for whatever reason

Hey guys, try downloading the game today. It should take up about 10 GB on your disk. I had the same problem over the weekend but today everything started working. I wrote to support but I didn't get an official answer, but a friend wrote to me that they fixed it for everyone (check for game updates).

Can confirm it works now, but i had to validate files once again, 10 files missing, little update and then nothing. I had to quit steam and after steam relaunch i got a 2 GB Update, now it works.

I went to HL2 store page and added the orange box in shopping cart and download started. No need for purcase obviously.
