I think Half-Life: Alyx was essentially Half-Life 3, but it wasn't as well received as previous games in the series because it was a VR exclusive. Since Valve began investing in VR technology, it was clear that the next Half-Life installment would be a VR game—after all, every new Half-Life release introduces some kind of "new mechanic," and VR was the big trend at the time. Unfortunately, not everyone is into VR, so it didn’t get the reception Valve had hoped for, or at least not to the extent they expected.
