Neither do mine. I've had these games installed for years and today none of them will launch The game simply won't start at all. I'm using Mac OS X, so I don't know if it'll run on Windows or what you're using but yeah, it's frustrating. I want to play it again.

I'm also a Mac user but my friend has the same problem on Windows 8.1

I had already passed them all and not one time.

I fixed the launch problem. This should for both Mac and Windows (don't know about Linux). Right click on HL2 in your library and select "Properties". After that click the Local Files tab and choose to verify the integrity of the game cache. The game files will be checked and if any are corrupted, Steam will automatically replace it with a good copy. My copy of HL2 had 1 bad file and after that had been replaced the game ran fine.

I'd repeat this process for Ep.1 and Ep.2 just to be sure, but for me it was just the one file in the main game.

I'm a fairly experienced Steam user and the scary thing about this is validation hasn't worked for me on any of them.

for my game, and the episodes including lost cost (I got this from the orange box) the verify option does not appear highlighted or clickable, I do not know why because when I first got the orange box, I beat half life and episodes without any problems running it, but now when I try, it just flashes "scanning for steam game updates" for a half a second and won't launch the game, but it works for black mesa and portal and TF2, I don't know why it is just my half life 2 games

I had this problem today with HL2 on Win10. The "verify the integrity of the game cache" thing did not work for me. What did work for me is to right-click the hl2.exe, select "Troubleshoot compatibility" and let it run its test. It said it should run as Win8. That worked. So I saved that setting and now it runs from the Steam console no problem (at the moment lol).

Do you have Souce SDK Base 2007 Installed?

I've looked up at the macOS console and found this... seems that macOS Catalina doesn't support 32-bit stuff anymore(yeah, I'm not much of a geek, so might tell some mistakes) Seems ihat WIN10 has the same issue

The console:

Unsupported 32-bit executable: "/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life 2/hl2_osx"

So I've checked the web... it seems that somehow current version on Steam is 32bit, even though they've released 64bit version in 2007. Doesn't make any sense. I've tried reinstalling the game -- didn't work
