Install CGFScape.
Go to this folder: Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ hl2
And open the file: hl2_sound_misc_dir.vpk
Now you should see a new window open. Select the "Sound" folder, right click and "Extract" it to your desktop.

Now, go to this folder again: Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ hl2
And create a new folder there, call it "custom", create another folder inside this one and call it something like "sound_mod".

Go to your desktop, take the "Sound" folder you extracted earlier and move it to the "sound_mod" folder you just created.

Replace any of the files inside this folder, when you're done, just open the game to test your new sounds.

This is old and doesn't work. CGFScape throws a dll error on launch and that's the end of it. All solutions call for loading outdated Windows files that refuse to install like C++ 2010, and some ancient version of DirectX.

RIP to you but i just used this without issues on a modern machine
easier way to do it is to just

record or find a sound
change the name to the file you want to replace
put it in and replace the file

The WAV format should be PCM, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz.
The original is mono, but stereo will also work.

So the sample rate should be 44100 Hz (not 48000).
Audio applications such as Audacity will allow you to convert the format.

I use GCFScape to extract files I want to remake. I do whatever Updates I need to do using Ableton. Then I change the sample rate down to where it needs to be using Audacity. Then it should be good, check what the sample rate should be and match it.
