Install this program: GCFScape

Go to this folder: Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ hl2

Open this file: hl2_sound_misc_dir.VPK

Do this: select a file/folder > right click > Extract

For Episode One sounds:
Folder: Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ episodic
File: ep1_pak_dir.VPK (search for the "Sound" sub-folder)

For Episode Two sounds:
Folder: Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ ep2
File: ep2_pak_dir.VPK (search for the "Sound" sub-folder)

Then you re-think life and go purchase one of the best games on Steam, by the best game company: Valve.
You can get the Half-Life 2 sounds in the files for Source Filmmaker without downloading anything, but GCFscape works with all source games and Source Filmmaker is a ton of gigabytes.
I just realized that this was posted in 2014. I'm late

Once you have your new files, go to this folder:

Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ hl2

Create a new folder and name it custom. Inside it, create another folder named new_sounds. Inside this last folder you need to replicate the folder structure of the original files.

For example: if the file you got from the VPK file was in the directory: sounds/weapons/pistol.wav
Then the folders you create inside custom should look something like this:

custom/new_sounds/sounds/weapons/pistol.wav

I hope this is clear enough.

let me see if i understood. I have to create a new file in the custom folder called ''new_sounds'', and i have to create a category for each sound like the original hl2 files. And i just put it right into it as a vpk file, right?
