Anyway. You need to set your Sound Blaster device as your main/default peripheral for sound.
If not, it will not output sounds on games that won't let you select your device manually.
Recents games have this qol feature, but games like HL2 don't.
Also, while Creative's drivers are a bit dodgy, SB Command is one of the rare decent software they've made.
In its settings you should have two tabs :
Application and Device
You can update both in these tabs, and I suggest you to do that first and foremost.
Then look on your Windows OS sounds settings to check if your Sound Blaster is your default output device.
