How can I play HL2 20th Anniversary Update without Steam?
I HAVE DOWNLOADED THE GAME FROM STEAM. I JUST DON'T WANT STEAM ACTIVE WHEN I'M PLAYING A SINGLEPLAYER GAME!

they also disable achievements when playing developer commentary playthrough so literally no point in playing via steam

I want to play directly from the hl2.exe but it gives me "failed to allocate minimum memory requirement"

I don't think you can, not without using anti Steam DRM mods. And I wouldn't try that in case Steam knows this. Not that I probably would to begin with though.

when hl2 first launched in 2004 it was possible to buy the game on steam and play from the exe directly without steam turned on or any drm

so i guess they are becoming more scummy with privacy invasion now after all this time, following their competition

It's not difficult to do this, however you won't get answers asking on the steam forums, lol.

This thread feels like a time capsule from 2005.
Its a first party game, your drivel is like complaining about a Mario game being redistricted to a Nintendo console. The only way to play without Steam is piracy.

fake news.

it was perfectly playable when launching directly from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2.exe before 20th anniversary

every time you post on here Valve is able to incrementally narrow down your GPS coordinates and a new digit in your social security number is revealed to them.

they don't track you through the games. it's through your forum posts.

stay strong.

LOL you people are using steam, buying games there, using the forum and complain about games only running with steam. What a pitty. Start steam in offline mode and you can still play. Or simply leave and only buy games on GOG.
