Userconfig.cfg not existing/being executed

I've tried uninstalling then re-installing HL2, playing with no mods enabled, and nothing seems to fix my closed captions not working properly or generating a config file. only thing i know currently is the hl2 folder doesn't have a valve folder(at least what i assume is what its meant to have) nore is there a user config file. but oddly CC works on some things but not everything (e.g. error message saying no caption for X) so im at a loss rn. editing settings seems to produce the userconfig.cfg not existing message but other than that im not sure if something is broken or my install is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Look in steamapps/common/Half-Life 2/hl2/cfg/, there isn't supposed to be a "Valve" folder. Also, I've never heard of HL2 using "userconfig.cfg" before, I think you mean either config.cfg or autoexec.cfg. I think you (or the AI that gave you that info) are confusing the game with HL1.

Some sounds missing captions is normal, AFAIK.

Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote //ROOT_MOD/cfg/config.cfg

is the line that comes up, not sure if its trying to execute userconfig.cfg and judging by your comment userconfig isn't meant to be a thing?? other than that i'm lost. that only comes up when i try to change a key-bind or try to turn closed captions on or any other subtitle on in the dev console

Sounds to me like it's related to a mod.

must be, not sure which of my mods is causing it though, any suggestions on what mods i should be on the lookout for?? ive also unsubbed from any dialog mods and nothing has changed

I am not using mods, the only thing I can think of, is to disable all mods, see if the error still occurs and if not, one by one activate the mods and start the game, to find out which one is causing it. Might by a a little intricate, but I see no other way. Hopefully you don't use that many mods
