Theory on Father Grigori
There are many reasons on the chances he escaped and died.

Theres a chance he escaped through the mines due to the fact you see brutal killings down in the mines in Half life 2 episode 2. Also, if you compare it to the killings in ravenholm, they both are the same. Also, remember how ravenhom is directly near the mines? So, he escaped through there and is basically like ratman and lives down there.

However, that does not make up for the fact that he ran into a pit of fire with zombies all around him. Seems unlikely but maybe since he saved Gordon in ravenholm, the gman might off saved him, but that doesn't explain the laughing (if you stay after his supposed death). The origin on him is unknown, but maybe his "priest" side of him saved him with so called magic?

Another possibility of him living is that monument next the place where he died. What if one of them opened a cave of some sort, leading down there. There must of been a specific reason why he chose that spot to hide. Ravenholn was like his home and I'm sure he wouldn't kill himself for a stranger.

Finally, they said "he would not appear." They did not specify if he would be seen face to face. Here's an example: Gordon and Alyx get cornered on the way by combine to the borealis and out of no where, a sniper comes and snipes them, or Gordon gets seperated from Alyx on the way to the borealis and he has to make his way through an unknown town off some sort, or mines, whatever. Then you see more references of brutal killings. Maybe carvings on the wall of ravenholm.

In conclusion, this was a nice little thing they did with Grigori. He's like ratman from portal.

What do you guys think? Post it below

1. Ravenholm isn't even part of the story. It's a side-quest, of sorts...
2. Father Grigori just likes hanging out there blasting zombies all day...
3. Don't read too much into HL2. It's no Star Wars...
Ravenholm actually is very VERY much a lore thing, its one of the biggest lore areas that hint at how evil and powerful the combine are, you probally just speedrun the game like an absolute moron.

Yeah but from another person in the replies he probally escaped via the mines you go through in ep2, or he was out of range and still lives in ravenholmn, but hes probally alive

In Judaeo-Christian mythology, Grigoris are angels also known as Watchers

Father Grigori's name and utterances such as "tending to his flock" are likely a direct reference to the Grigori concept

It's easy to considering him a good Watcher, but it's also possible he could be Gadreel or one of Gadreel's descendents. Gadreel introduced weapons to humans, which may be signified by the mechanical traps, as well as giving the shotgun to Freeman

His self-sacrifice in the cemetery could be interpreted as an acknowledgment that his true place is in Hell (for rebelling against God). Maybe helping Freeman being an attempt at repentance

Or it coulda just been a random name and some vague Christian references without much thought put into it that coincidentally comes off deeper than it really is

Who knows

yes it is lol. You literally go there as part of the story lol.

though yes, the location itself isn't as important.

Even though I don't think Ravenholm is essential to the overall story of Half Life, I still think it plays a vital role in world building post-combine takeover.

oh, definitely. That are the pre-crowbar gameplay do a great job at illustrating the abuse and unlimited power of the Combine.

not sure if my half life 2 game is broke or something but father grigori for me still keeps shooting zombies after when he is supposed to "die" so i am pretty sure he is alive.
also ravenholm is quite far away from the citadel so he could've survived the citadel after it exploded
