Why the HEV suit?
I have recently been replaying the Half-Life 2 campaign. During the begining where Gordon Freeman enters the lab to meet Dr. Kleiner. Gordon Freeman is being told to put on the HEV suit. Gordon Freeman was supposed to be teleported to Eli's Lab (Black Mesa East) but it broke down due to Lamarr (Kleiner's pet) when Gordon Freeman was being teleported. As it was an unexpected event... Gordon Freeman has been left with nothing but to take the route through the dangerous canals. As Gordon Freeman reaches Eli's Lab. He will tell Gordon Freeman these lines: "We will get you out of that hazard suit and back into your lab coat where you belong."
It got me thinking... Why did Gordon Freeman put on the HEV suit in the first place if it was going to be removed anyway. Sure it helped us though the canals. But what if Lamarr didn't enter the ventilation systems and the teleporter worked as it should have? I don't understand why Gordon Freeman put on the HEV suit. Maybe to try it on... See if it still fits? What are your thoughts on this?

Probably put it on to make sure that it still fits, or was to be used as a just-in-case if there was an attack on the lab.

Probably to bring it with him to Black Mesa East, I'm sure he would have still made experiments that would have required it, or a simpler guess could be that Eli's quote "We will get you out of that hazard suit and back into your lab coat where you belong" could just be a figure of speech meaning he's there to perform experiments rather than fighting enemies.

If the people at BME wanted the HEV suit then why didn't he just carry it with him to the teleporter?
he said that about the lab coat but gordo still wears the HEV suit.

...and?

When Barney arrived at Kleiner's lab and hears that Alyx and Gordon will be teleported he tells Kleiner "Since he's not going to be taking the streets you may as well get him out of his civies." Barney wasn't certain if the teleporter would work since he mentions something happening to a cat. Maybe he thought Gordon would be safer in the machine if he wore the suit, and he did say Gordon stirred up the hive since he caused a miscount and they were looking for him. ...unless Barney just wanted to see him undressed. *shrugs
I was going to say the same thing until I rememberd that they sent alyx first without any suit.

My guess is like buckaroo said, just a figure of speech. Honestly with the way the stuff was unfolding after the tele screwed up, it would've been more odd if gordon found the suit elsewhere without altering something to make it fit into the game properly.

I'd expect that if you want to take some clothing with you,you could put it on rather then carry it.

MY GOD! The HEV suit is Gordon's symbol just like the crowbar! They were gonna give him the suit anyway even if the teleporter would have worked because the HEV suit is Gordon's. Besides, 'into the lab coat' is temporary!
Gordon is keeping up with fashion..............

Knowing how things turned out in Black Mesa, that was a "just in case" thing.
Plus, Gordon stores his music on his suit, where do you think the music comes from xD.

Well if you actually think about it the HEV suit was actually used in experiments. Think back to HL1 that's why you had it on.

Well the HEV suit is suppost to protect againts radiation. And also Alyx didn't have any kind of HEV suit on her when she went through the teleporter.

As scholar said, if you played HL1, it was used for safety.

It's likely the Freeman was going to take on more of a combat role than sitting in a lab. Sure he would be useful in a lab, but then his super commando skills and the fact he's a living legend would be wasted. Kleiner likely feels that being a super commando is not really what Freeman was meant for but understands that few others can do what he can.

The bigger questions are what happened to the old HEV and where did this new one come from? The one in HL1 is a MK IV while the one in HL2 is a MK V. So also who upgraded the suit, was someone using it this whole time, and why do they call it Freeman's?
