look in file content_log.txt for lines with appid 220 (this game)
might be an error msg what is wrong
and you have checked your antivirus log
and there is space on the disk
why steam will not write 10 files and no error msgs = report it
click on steam help/support then fill out a trouble ticket

without knowing why the files cannot validate - out of space, folder/file permission issues, disk issues, which files - maybe uninstall the game and try reinstalling.
click on steam help/support then fill out a trouble ticket
edit: do not play another hl2 game while update occurring - the other games use the hl2 files so update will not write over them
It was alternating between 16 and 32 invalid files for me, between attempts to run hl2 and load a save. I cleared the cache, and I'm not current getting the message about the number of invalid files but it still seems to be downloading updates/files.
