Crosshairs, please go away. No, seriously.
I was able to get rid of the crosshairs in single player HL2 using the standard console commands. Worked good. Then I got in the airboat, and they came back. Can't get rid of them when in the airboat (I'm imagining that there are weapon mounts for vehicles in HL2, but I don't care. I don't want to see any crosshairs EVER. I don't care what I have to do, or how many steps I must follow, to get rid of them, since I won't be putting them back on EVER. The rest of the hud elements should remain in place, if possible, which is why I don't solve this problem by turning the whole hud off. That works, but I don't want to lose the rest of the hud. What can I do?

How do you aim?
hi Mar 10, 2016 @ 6:38pm
can't you just bind the command to a key?

The airboat "direction" crosshair uses the same "5-dots" as the player aiming crosshair, located at the "Q" position in the halflife2.ttf font file.
You should have subscribed to the other discussion where you were asking. :steamfacepalm: Another player was kind enough to post a link to an edited font file that hides the crosshair in both cases:

Vehicle mounted guns have a separate aiming crosshair that does not use a font file in the hl2\resource directory. Hiding that might be a bit more difficult.

cl_drawhud 0
....no more crosshairs and the entire hud display kinda makes you more hardcore really good for action screenshots too. I just bind such commands to easily turn on and off.
Shouldn't it just be "crosshair 0" in the console? Works for CS and the like.

Hi, Calmly Frenetic. Thanks for the link. I don't know why it couldn't have been given without the facepalm, but I'll take what I can get.

For the record, I didn't know that there were any new comments on the old thread. I got no notifications. I don't know why. You mention subscribing, but I wasn't aware that this was something I needed to do. I thought I'd be notified when new comments got posted, but apparently, that is not the case. So I recently began wondering if the lack of notifications was because I hadn't originalted the thread myself. Evidently not.

You seem annoyed at the fact that I posted a new thread, as if by doing so, I am somehow being disrespectful to those who gave feedback. But the reason I did this was because I thought starting one of my own thread might help me get more direct feedback. I also did it only after becoming fully resigned to the fact that I was going to need to ask the question directly, having already repeatedly failed to solve the problem myself.

Hopefully, this explanation satisfies you as to why I didn't do what you think I should have done.

Hi, R-800. For the record, I am not the slightest bit annoyed by your new thread. My unclear use of a steam emoticon was intended to express your own possible annoyance at missing out on a very useful piece of information. The "Subscribe to discussion" button is something I expect many Steam users are unaware of. I'm sorry if you were offended in any way.

I am genuinely interested to know if the new font file works for you too. :helpfulalien:
(At least until you get the guns.)

Edit: Does "facepalm" mean the same thing in your part of the world?

Sorry, Calmly Frenetic. I didn't mean any disrespect. We had a misunderstanding. I thought the facepalm was your own, directed at me, for annoying you. No problem.

The font file did indeed work for me. That is, until the airboat was given a gun mount. Then, a whole new crosshair, different from the standard one, appeared.

I can certainly understand why people think the crosshairs are essential, and that we shouldn't be upset about it. But that doesn't matter. Setting choices that give every player the experience they are after is what matters.

I can't believe, even now, how frustatingly impossible it is to get rid of the crosshairs for good. Every new play mode brings back a new version of them, and the console commands, of course, are useless to do anything about it.

My guess is that the font file you linked me to gets rid of the standard crosshairs, plus the ones that appear by default when entering an unarmed vehicle. But it does NOT get rid of the crossahairs from the weapon-equipped vehicle. I would edit the font file myself to fix this, but I've already been down that road, and editing font files is evidently not my strong suit.

I'm always annoyed by games that force unnecessary conventions onto players. Half-Life 2 seems to be a lot less challenging than Half-Life 1. I don't like having my hand held while playing a game. Removing the crosshairs is one thing that could have helped a little bit to overcome the crytbaby design conventions. Except that I can't get the crosshairs to go away, even now, at least not COMPLETELY.

Outrageous.

"Vehicle mounted guns have a separate aiming crosshair that does not use a font file in the hl2\resource directory. Hiding that might be a bit more difficult."

Indeed. Still, I'd be absolutely thrilled if anyone out there has any idea how this might be done. I mean, these games can be modded, after all, so it can't be impossible, right?

Download this and put it in Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Half-Life 2 \ hl2 \ custom

invisible_vehicle_crosshair_test[mega.nz]

If the custom folder doesn't exist just create it.
