The pistol is a lot more accurate than SMG
No it's not
When you run out of ammo, long range. Neither of which the pistol was useful for in HL1.
Why do you keep making so many pointless threads?
real answer to the question is that gimmickfest and changes of tempos are main themes of hl2. valve loved to make something for a moment then drop it for another gimmick. the pistol plays in that dynamic by serving in specific chapters, for instance the early gunfights and its barrel minigames, ep1's lowlife making you rely on alyx and maybe ep2's strider busting.
Why would I use a magnum or crossbow over the pistol to kill a barnacle or headcrab?
This makes me think you could probably play the entirety of HL1 using just the glock and it would be a semi-decent challenge, and that trying to beat HL2 with just the USP would be utter pain.
beating monsters or combines with the pistol is very much manageable. you won't want to kill everyone nor engage from as far, but there are other tricks to kill them at medium-close without too much damage.
