I assume that the HL2 Beta was darker in tone because Valve wanted to capture the sense of dread in a dystopian world after the Combine took over. While the base game was dark, the beta was way more gritty even including touchy subjects like child labor. Apparently a lot of the stuff from the beta was cut because playtesters thought it wasn't fun which is why the base game is pretty different from the original vision. Another reason this stuff was cut was because of a massive leak that revealed an unfinished build of HL2 to the public which severely impacted its development and Valve's other games. It's a shame a lot of stuff from the beta was removed because they actually seem pretty cool but I'm still glad we got the final product.

Damn, didn't know they had things like child labour in the game. I know very little about the beta except for the "haha beta was dark and griddy" memes.
