It is basically inferior to the original in every which way possible. It has a very artificial, "made by committee" feeling that is a far cry from the sheer charisma of the first game.
Alyx is annoying because she keeps coddling Gordon and is obviously written to be nerd bait for the player, but the other characters are hardly any better.
Not saying it's a bad game but the only thing Half-Life 2 has going for it that is actually notable is the amazing art direction. But even there i have a reservation since Half Life 2 lacks to cohesion of the first game, with the Black Mesa facility being the actual star of the game (hence why you spend so long on that intro train ride).
Half Life 1 will forever be one of the most iconic and out of the left field releases in gaming history. Half Life 2 has that sequel problem of new people coming in and having no idea of how to recapture the vibe of the first game and devolving in a lot of fan service. "Here's your crowbar Gordon!". Like why would Barney care about the crowbar. It was an iconic weapon for the game for us the players but why the hell would an in game character care? Why would they know?
There, i said it.
Ok, I didn't know that you could respond to threads even if you didn't own the game, honestly makes alot of sense now that I think about it. Also I'm not trying to attack you opus I'm just putting my opinion on the matter and it may have come out hostile. You can think that the original game is better. I personally don't think it is. I honestly hate threads like this as they stir up pointless arguments.
Glad you decided to post that on a 9 year old thread.
You can easily check if someone owns the game by the mouse icon next to their names. Also, if he owns the game and had played it, that makes his criticisms more valid.
While I don't agree with him that this game is overrated, bringing up the ratings doesn't prove him wrong, it only strengthens his point.
