OK, not much makes sense. Just opened ep1 and tried again at the console and the game options menu, no key flooding in either, so I entered the commands to bind a key and toggle it then later dragged it to the mouse button in its software and it worked. I was also able to repeat same in ep2.
I'm now wondering if maybe my keyboard is beginning a random failure mode, its got to be between 7 to 9 yrs old.
I'm also wondering if one changes a console command that it negates/erases the previous one?
Enter the command key_listboundkeys to see a list of all current bindings.
Enter the command unbindall to delete ALL bindings.
One action can be bound to multiple keys, but a key can only have one action bound to it.
So binding a key will erase any previous bindings for it.
Or use the unbind command to erase individual keys.
Maybe your mouse software is faulty?
The offered console commands will be saved in a new accounting file logging all the junk I do from now on. I knew about the unbound command but could not recall the keys I 1st used when binding/toggling. If I hadn't flaked and cleared the existing mouse commands before rewriting I might have saved myself some anxiety. However, I'm thinking my old keyboard may be walking the same old downward spiral of my old Logitech M510 mouse.
As for the newish G700S mouse, (3 months) I had not considered it as a culprit due to the actions of pressed keys while in "Options Keyboard Menu and in Dev Console". True the vibrating image, (like up to 10+ mini ducks persec) occurred while pressing G5. I assumed it was due to the couple thousand Ks that streamed across the command line, (I'm a rung above search and peck). By the time I looked up and saw all the Ks I flaked. As a test I pressed different keys to watch them scroll across the command line, I figured it was like the K was being held down forever.
The (list bound keys) command is clever and helpful, I got to clear all the cross commands and unify them across the 4 HL2 games. I know there's a way to create up to 5 profiles with my mouse software but I haven't spent the time to brain it out yet.
I didn't do an (unbindall), I was afraid it might also unbind all the keyboard option menu commands along with my own.
I don't suppose there is a list or file of helpful (Source?) console commands not related to cheat codes that could be D/l'd?

One of the most helpful commands I know is "find" - it lets you search for text in command name/description. For example: find bind
