Strangely it does not work for me. I run the steam version and set to auto update [Build Label: 2257546].
By the way I use some custom skin with custom sounds and scripts. Could it be this that cause conflict ?

Sorry, should have been clearer.
I remember reading a post on reddit about how the music would keep playing between levels with the original Half Life 1 Gold Source version, but I can't find any information about Half Life 2's release version.
I would love to see this in action for Half Life 2: Update, but I am currently replaying through HL2's Collector's Edition Release Version instead, to see the game as I remember it back when it first came out in 2004.
As far as I remember the music did cut abruptly in the original version.
Even with the fade out in hl2:update, it's still sad to not hear the entirety of the songs.
My workaround was to take it slower/waiting before hitting the load triggers. Maybe it's due to engine limitation because it's very odd to me that this was always been like this...
Compared to the vanilla, update fix mostly bugs and changes some model to the assets from hl2:ep 1 & 2. The changes are so minor that I'm confortable to recommend hl2:update for new players. But I understand your wish to experience it exactly as you remember.
Best of luck.
Type "save_transition_music 1" in the console. No idea why it's not the default.
