how do I open and play ambient sound files?

I'm trying to go through the game file for Half Life 2 and whenever I try to go through the common\Half Life 2\hl2\sound folder I try opening sound.cache and it won't open because idk what app to use. Anyone have suggestions for how i could open this file and listen to the individual sound files? What I mean by this is the ambience for certain areas. (like in the Ravenholm mines you hear hole_amb3 or when you're in the playground in City 17 and you hear playground_memory) Do I need to get a certain outside app to open these or am I in the wrong folder?

EDIT: Just found the proper folder, but I have no idea how to open or use VPK files. Any tips?
