Half Life 2 vs Update

Which one should I play?(If update, tell me how can I make Steam count Update gameplay hours as original game)

Half-life 2 vanilla is more updated than update, such as combine pain sounds, npc blinking etc

Update is overall best looking version so might as well play that one. However as the above says there are a couple of bugs fixed in the vanilla game that aren't in Update, you can get these fixes in Update by copying certain DLL files from the vanilla game folder to the Update one.

Which dll files?

hl2/bin/ client and server.dll's I believe. I don't have HL2 installed at the minute so I can't check but that should work.

I didn't see anything in the update that caught my good eye, I did notice there were changes in the number and variety of AI on screen in some places in each chapter. I played through 1 time for a Boo then went back to the vanilla
