Why were Vortigaunts helping Gordon?

Gordon slaughtered a lot of Vortigaunts back in Half Life 1. They seems held zero grudge against him.

The vortiguants were slaves of the nihilant and when gordon killed the nihilant all of the vorts were freed and since the combine invasion happened they had no other choice but to join the resistence

I've always found it kind of funny that Gordon accidented himself into becoming the Vortiguant's great emancipator despite mowing down so many of them.

Vorts were, as far as i know, slaves to the giant space baby.

i believe it was mostly the military, security guards, and a few scientists including freeman only
