Sooo... what happened to the Xenians after Half life 1?
So here's what I know... cue Black Mesa incident>>>Half Life 1>>>7 Hour War>>>Half Life 2 (and possibly Portal somewhere in between).

But exactly happened to all the aliens that Freeman fought on his escape from black mesa? Did they ALL get blown up along with Black Mesa? But then how did the vortigaunts and headcrabs make it to HL2?

Did they go back to Xen? And if so, then what about the Antlions? aren't they Xenians too?

It seems the only species that reappeared from the original HL were the Vorts and the headhumpers. Which makes me wonder what happened to the Bullsquids, Gargantuas, Houndeyes, Grunts, etc.

Antlions are extremely invasive, probably driving the other species extinct. The vorts lived because they are an intelligent species, and headcrabs lived because the combine bred them as bio-weapons.

The portal storms that occured as a side effect of the Combine's superportals teleported a lot of Xen creatures (antlions, headcrabs, vorts, barnacles, bullsquids, houndeyes etc.) to earth, hence why the wastelands outside the Combine controlled cities are invested with them. Both bullsquids and houndeyes were supposed to be enemies in HL2 but they were cut, it's also canon that Eli lost his leg to a bullsquid.

Xen itself is apparantly under the control of the G-Man's "employers", it's unknown what happened to the creatures there. Their original homeworlds are probably still under Combine control.

Icthysauros and leeches probably survived because they were living underwater.
Headcrabs and antilons survived because they can live underground.

The combine just wipe out all other xen creatures except alien slaves who are intelligent and the combine enslaved them too (one can be seen sweeping the floor at a combine-controlled station).
Barnacles are like barnacles, they just appear and spread their offsprings while no one bothered to terminate them. Even NPCs in-game ignore them.

Most of them are still around as shown by some paintings in HL:A and tweets by series writer Marc Laidlaw, just not present by the places gordon went trought, and makes sense since the citadel's suppresion field may have affected the local, more animal-ish xenians, not to mention 80% of the areas he visited were combine controlled. Then there are others like the controllers and the alien grunts, these probably died because they were biologically engineered by the Nihilanth's forces and only sustained by them.

Bullsquids and Houndeyes, I think one of the writers confirmed that they're still out there on Earth, but Gordon never saw one, Probably because all the areas Gordon went to were policed by the Combine, or something/someone else.

Headcrabs were taken by the Combine and weaponized by putting them in capsules and genetically modifying them, turning them into Poison and Fast Headcrabs.

Gargantuas were probably wiped out to extinction by the Combine.

Alien Grunts were probably also taken away and modified by the Combine.

The Combine probably Hunted the Gargantuas into extinction, Bullsquids would be easy to force out of cites and areas by them, Houndeyes would be harder to force out of combine areas but they'd still be able to do so.

Vortigaunts integrated into Society, so trying to stomp them out would be hard, Headcrabs and Antlions are very invasive so it'd be basically impossible to stomp them out.

Here's my opinon to what happened to all those Xenains. When the Combine came, They not only made animals completly vanish, But also lead the "Extinction" to bullsquids and houndeyes.

I know I'm necroing that thread but it's right at the beginning, when you get off the train. Under the first big BreenScreen you go left (where the woman leans on the fence, waiting for her husband). On the right side, there's a fence you can't go through, and that sweeping Vort is there.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
