Half Life is genuinely too scary for me and it sucks
I have always been super scared by horror games. I have never liked most of them at all. But the games that I find way harder to play are games with well done creepy atmospheres. I have played through a few of the less scary horror games (Layers of Fear, Edge of Nowhere), but I have never been able to get through either Half Life or Half Life 2. And that really sucks as they are universally praised games. Now that Half-Life: Alyx has been announced this sucks even more, as I have been looking forward to the really big killer VR game. And this seems to be it, and I just won't be able to play it. Especially with those headcrabs jumping straight at you in fully immersed VR. So my question is, if there is any way to make both Half-Life and Half-Life 2 less scary somehow? A big part of the scarefactor comes from the enviroments and so on, but what puts me over the edge are the headcrabs (they remind me of spiders and I have arachnophobia), and the monsters who grab you from above and reel you in. Could these somehow be modded out? Don't think reskinning them would do much to help tbh. I know it would make the games significantly easier, but I doubt I otherwise would be abel to get through the games :steamsad:.

I feel you, bruh. Worse thing for me will be the antlions (I'm not a fan of insects bigger than my Esc. key). I hope by the time I can afford vr there'll be options to change the enemy models to teddybears or something.

It might make you feel more at ease if you know what's going to happen.
You'll still have to deal with it of course.
There's a guy on YouTube called BigMac Davis who's done full walkthroughs of all the Half Life games so far. ( not the VR yet )
He shows you where everything is...so the headcrabs aren't a shock when they show up.
And in game they're actually kind of funny. He approaches it with a lot of humor about the enemies.
But yes, some of the monsters are potentially gruesome or scary if it affects you that way.
Personally it doesn't bother me that much. But some of the zombies with multiple fast headcrabs are rather icky.
The Half Life series is so interesting it's worth it.
It's the touchy crouch jumping that bothers me.Better to get attacked by a headcrab than miss a long jump.

I'm on the same boat. I see all the compliments for the game but it is too creepy for me. I stopped playing at the zombie alleyway part and never touched the game again. It's weird because other horror games don't strike as much fear into me as HL2 does. What a shame though becasue I'd like to experience the story, maybe I'll pick up the game again sometime.

Some things aren’t for everyone though. I mean a big part of the enjoyment of half life are the scares and the heart pumping moments when the shambling toxic zombies throw head crabs at you.

There are plenty of other awesome things about it of course but that’s a big part.

I’m VR... if you couldn’t get through a flat screen old school looking game... im pretty sure you will literally rip off the headset and throw it against the wall when a crab jumps at you ;)

hmm.... maybe you can delete all the texture and play with (pink) no texture or replace it with other texture. Tbh, I don't think half life is scary at all compare to Outlast or Amnesia xD

Didn't Skyrim do something like that with spiders? The results were a bit more disconcerting.

This game scary? I find it very dull. It’s more post apocalyptic than scary. Weirdly enough, Portal managed to be scarier. Not for most of the game, but the occasional glimpses to the outside, and the dens were much more tense because it felt like something you shouldn’t be seeing

I was just thinking about that chapter while reading this, if they hate Headcrabs they're going to adore that part.

That’s the one part of the game I say ages very well. A legitimately fun and spooky level

Seriously?

If you remove monsters out of the game, things stop working. Some areas only reachable if you let yourself pull in. Maybe there are some alternative models for them that are less scary to you?

As for Ravenholm, yes is a bit spooky. Nowadays I know it by heart and just walk through it but I still remember playing it for the very first time, when HL2 was new (and I of course a lot younger). It was scary.

You could take Dog's Ball with you to Ravenholm. The ball follows you around. Zombies target the ball instead of you. And it oneshots the Zombies easier than the Shotgun. And lugging the ball around just adds a comedy factor to anotherwise spooky chapter.

Otherwise just skip this particular chapter.

Just think about what Gordon Freeman went through and you should feel better
