headcrab headcanon
When I first played HL2, I wondered about the headcrab life cycle. It seemed like all three types of zombie were part of it.

1. A headcrab latches onto its victim, takes over, and starts to alter them physically, which is the basic zombie.
2. The host's flesh begins to wear away more and more, the headcrab takes full control and adapts to its host's motor functions. This is the fast zombie.
3. Eventually, the zombie begins to grow new headcrabs on its body, which fall off and hunt for new victims, starting the cycle over.

Far from perfect, as it doesn't even explain why we see all three types of headcrab without a host. Wouldn't be difficult to explain that away, though. Of course, now I know that fast and poison headcrabs are just mutations, and not part of the regular life cycle at all. And that gonarchs are quite possibly mature headcrabs or queens of some kind. But I still prefer my own theory over the semi-official one.

Hl1 does this explanation. Look up "gonnarch". That's the final stage of mutation, but the combine modified how headcrabs mutate their victims, making it impossible for them to naturally reproduce.

Btw, the second stage of mutation is the opposing force enemy called the "gonome".

Maybe but don't think so, unless the chubby HCs morph into the long legged fast spiders then go looking for hosts. Chubbies are on Zs and zombine, I think fast long legs are the ones on the speeders

Yeah, saw that stuff already. I didn't know that last part about it being impossible for them to reproduce after being modified, though.

You'll notice the hl1 zombies are far more mutated than hl2 zombies, seeing as the chest turns into a mouth.

I think they have this in HL2 also, but it's definitely more obvious in the first game.

I missed it too, until I saw it mentioned on a wiki or something.

Each headcrab does something different to its host, and the gonarch prolly makes 3 types of headcrabs

No, it says in HL2 that the combine genetically altered the normal headcrabs to become spiders and poisons

McSiblings,
Could you provide a link to the claim or the game and moment in the chapter where this is pronounced?
