High pitched noise when running and jumping.
Hi, i've noticed that there is this high-pitched whining noise that comes from my headphones when I run and jump in this game. It is most noticable when jumping on metal surfaces. Can anyone help?

I noticed it but I never got bothered about it.
This happens because it's in the sound files, you would require to edit it and remove it, but it could remove some parts of the actual sound.

I hear it too. I extracted the files and put them in Audacity to remove it but the high pitch sound does not exist.

It's always been there.

You can't remove it in Audacity because there's no unique jumping sound. It's just the sound of footsteps but louder. The sound breaks a certain threshold it's not meant to break because of the game's instructions to be a certain volume over what it normally is.

I know this is not a new thread, but I've also noticed this issue. However I found the actual issue. It is a high frequency noise that is in some of the footstep recordings. You can actually check it in Audacity if you use the Spectogram view, set the maximum frequency to something around 16kHz then you can see a huge solid red line around 13kHz. Then you can remove it with the Spectral edit multi-tool.

I found 12 sounds like this (4 for concrete, metal and wood footsteps) and I removed these annoying frequencies. I would share my version if Steam wouldn't remove the link.

Tell me if you're interested and know another way to share it.

I will try to upload it to GameBanana where you will be able to look for it as "Fixed footstep sounds". I will update you when it is up.

Done! if someone ever finds this thread, just look up GameBanana for the aformentioned "Fixed footstep sounds" page. Good luck and have a nice day!

Hey there, I noticed that annoying sound right away (same for Portal) but when I go to the sound folder there's only 1 cache file in there while the ''Fixed footstep sounds'' folder you made are separated. Could this be due to an update they've made or am I looking in the wrong place? C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\sound

You gotta put the "FixedFootstepSounds" folder into the "custom" folder, so it is like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\custom\FixedFootstepSounds

It must have been a sound driver or card issue. I have had my SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium since about 2015 or 2016 (before this post was made), and have never experience this.

Could you upload this to the steam workshop now that HL2 has support for it
