Pop life, death and growth
I've had my last 2 games end because i just cant get enough population.

I've been unable to get above 37 pop in the last 2 games due to people dying, either through accident or illness. And not enough people coming in from outside. I was seeing 3-5 people dying but only 2-3 coming in.

Then i got hit by a harsh winter, and 10 people died, and then in then a sand storm wiped out what was left, mostly.

Deffo needs a bit of rebalancing early game imo

try easy mode for the first games :)

Shouldnt have to play on easy mode to fix a balance issue

Try distributing Water / Food as Regular (minimum) Extra or Double even better.
That should give you a good Health boost. If your Health remains Low, people will get sick as time goes on.
I.E focus hard on Water and Food at the beginning

right from the get go place 2 field huts for wood and stone then get 3-4 gather huts and spam mushrooms 3 soup kitchens about 4 wells one for each node to allow for faster water extraction rather than 1 well for 2-3 nodes connect them to roads for a great bonus and build 4 storage enough is never enough keep adding and dont forget to increase the food and water allocation had 10000-20000 itll help to give you very nice stockpile for the weather events and the extra bonuses for double rations food and water to help get things going faster plus extra shacks at the start i built about 9 in a U shape with tavern in the centre for growth and entertainment but dont go to crazy save some space to then get the pub and infirmary and guard towers later on i got to 700 pop before having to destroy so much for a new layout to have the extra facilitys

This game is way unbalanced. One well, one meat hut, one fishing hut and one mushroom hut and then ofcourse houses, is well enough to keep them with more food, water and shelter than they can use, yet they die from illness very quickly after second winter.

Balance is fine. On the normal setting on Meadows I've never lost someone due to weather. While there is some RNG (like that poor bastage that got struck by lightning in the soup kitchen), if you don't run on x3 speed the whole time, and get your buildings going by following the tutorial, you shouldn't have these problems. I'm guessing the OP had the speed at x3 and didn't get anything established before the first winter, so they had not enough mushrooms and such.

The only time I run the game at x3 speed is when I'm waiting for something to build/finish, whatever. You can't treat a survival game like Sim City or Cities:Skylines.

Get scouts and have them find the nearby sources of basic resources like lumber ASAP. Otherwise you can easily slip into a death spiral where a few deaths can reduce your resource income just enough to no longer be able to produce enough for survival, causing more deaths and an unrecoverable state.

What difficulty are you playing on? On hard, first map I haven't seen anything THAT harsh.
『Insperatus』 Jan 23, 2024 @ 3:38pm
Might be the RNG. I haven't had any trouble getting to pop up to around 72 on Normal Tundra first 3years on my 2nd play. All I've adjusted was water, food, workload etc to boost moral depending on situations and even with the weather. On another play through I made it up to 113 pop after the 4th or 5th year. By year 13 I was already at 256 pop.

Most of these issues contribute to user issue or RNG. You need to look at your panels to adjust to conditions.

This is interesting. I found the exact opposite. I couldn't stop my people breeding, and had strangers arriving all the time. I ended up with a population of more than 1,500. I was on normal difficulty playing campaign.

On what year?

I think the population growth might be tied to the attraction mechanic as well.

Later in the game you can have too much population, and not enough space to accommodate them.

I booted up the game for the first time today, playing on normal. Yes im kinda always short on pop but only a handfull died so far. 1 from a fire, 2 from lightning hitting my soup kitchen and 1 in year 2... (from old age or something? i dunno).

I am playing on normal and taking it slow, make sure you lower/raise workforce when needed, don't overwork your workers and keep your storages well stocked. Keep your people healty because there is no way to heal em up for the first 4 cycles except lowering workforce.

Nothing wrong with balance if you ask me, yes it takes time but this is a slow game, not a race. Go too fast and you screw yourself over. Just hit Cycle 5 but i have to wait for pop increase before i can go any futher. Played almost 8 hours, so thats for another day :)

Aslo to add, stockpile upgrade to storehouse is bugged atm.

Yeah you start with a small population but in the later game the issue shifts to the breeding like rabbits issue and you cannot get a stable population. I would suggest we need some kind of population controls for the later game (I hope the Dev's are reading)..
