Hope this helps a little, and have fun building the castle/city walls! :-)
As for the light sources, I don't know. I have not tried much with that, only placed some lanterns and not much else. My guess is that it will get expanded upon eventually if the devs can keep the same pace as during the closed beta and demo.
As a bonus, paths will make archways in buildings rather than doors if one of the walls is damaged with the demolish tool. With some very careful work you can make it look like there is an open door there. just put a tiny building at a diagonal next to the archway and put a door in it. I just happened to build the door on the wrong side so the handle's in the wrong place.

To create doors on an elevated floor:
1 Place a building next to a taller tower(or another building),
2.Drag the top down to flat the roof.
3.After you see a flat rooftop, stretch the to join two building together, this will give you an elevated floor.
4.Place a window on the taller building, at the joint of the two buildings, this will give you a door, allowing guards to go from one tower to another.
You can create tower walls, patios, and bridges using this technique.
