Game won't start
[Edited as of 27/04/2023]
I've removed my posts but I'd also like people finding this page to have a solution.
What ended up fixing my issues was soulReaver's solution.

It was my Direct X9 that was bugged, a file in the folder sysWow64 named d3dx9_32.
Hope it helped, thanks for all the help figuring out the problem.

Here is the direct x end user runtime:

Here is mine d3dx9_32.dll

{LINK REMOVED}

I have a 64 bit os Windows 8 SO i have two folders one System32 and SysWOW64 folder. I have copied the d3dx9_32.dll from both of those folders and placed them in individual folders with the same name so there not mixed up. if your running 64bit youll have both of those folders in which you can place both of those in there. if your running on a 32 bit machine i think you will only have the system 32 in which you would only use that one.

TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK. IM NOT ELEIGIBLE IF ANY THING HAPPENS

If this works hoopla for you =) . if not ehhh back to the drawing board.

As for earlier I am running the newest physx drivers apparently phsyxx was a lil corrupted for me from the newest nvidia drivers. What worked for me was uninstalling mine and installing the old phsyx drivers that came with the game then running the game once verified it ran . closed the game then went to the link in my instructions and installed the new drivers again. This time i ran the game and it ran fine no message nothing =) and enjoying it.

Hope this helps ppl

hey dude.. i made it work here! go to C:\~\SteamApps\common\divinity2_dev_cut\Data\Video and try to open the intro video.. if you can´t watch the video try to download the mega codec pack and install it.. and reinstall the PhysX (C:\~\SteamApps\common\divinity2_dev_cut\support\PhysX.
I did it and work here! sorry for my english.. uahauhau =P

If you rename the intro.wmv video, the game will skip playing it. That would probably be the easiest way to determine if that is the problem.

Did you try starting the game directly from the Divinity2.exe / Divinity2-debug.exe program files in the ..\divinity2_dev_cut\bin\ install folder?

Do you have large fonts set in Windows? Check Display in the Control Panel and make sure it is set to 100% (smaller).

Is your desktop set to 32 bit true colour (more than likely it is). You can check by right clicking on the desktop, selecting Screen resolution, advanced settings, list all modes (or in XP, right click the desktop, properties, settings). In the unlikely event it is set to 16 bit high colour, change it.

If you have crossfire or SLI you can try disabling it temporarily.

It sounds like you have tried a lot of the suggestions in the topics below, but perhaps not all...

Divinity 2 Developer's Cut Woes

I don't think there was a patch for the Developer's Cut version of the game, other than a hotfix[www.larian.com] to add an option to invert the Y axis in dragon form. With the retail release of the anthology, the version numbers listed in the bottom right corner of the main menu for the normal mode of D2:DC was 1.4.700.49 before the hotfix, and 1.4.700.56 afterwards (the Developer Mode version numbers are 1.4.700.47 and 1.4.700.57).

Try emailing support@larian.com, with a description of the problem (and maybe a link to this discussion) and the report generated by this support tool[www.larian.com].

What are your system specs (graphics card, cpu, ram)? Could be something there thats unsupported.

I'm not sure how long the current response time is, but probably Monday/Tuesday, though unless an issue shows up in the report, I don't know if they would have any more suggestions than mentioned in the links above, or similar topics.

Laptop or desktop?

I think the above suggestions and links cover the majority of suggestions that can help with crashes on startup. There may still be things to try, but at the moment I can't think of anything new...

Crashes on Boot. - think you've checked / tried all of this

I've got the same problem. Usually everything works so it's weird being on the other side of the fence on the forums.

Not impressed with this! I'm guessing its a win7 problem. It doesnt let me update the physx file either as it says the currently installed drivers are newer than the ones your trying to install.

All videos in the directory run fine by the way. I tried rename the intro one but same problem so i named it back to intro.

@Vargas78, Not a Win7 issue, unless its a specific version. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and everythings fine.

Have the same issue, for the record. Get to hear a second or two of the music for the intro.wmv (that plays flawlessly in WMP and VLC), then crash. Updated everything, far above system requirements, on Win7Professional.

To note is that I could play Elder Scrolls: Oblivion a few months ago, and I played a bit of Divinity 2: Eco Draconis (a borrowed copy, bought Director's cut to have my own) about six months or more ago on this system, and both ran without problems. But now when I heard the two could be connected I tried to run Oblivion, and it crashed in a similar way. I have only installed other Steam games since then, and updated windows and drivers. I did uninstall the K-Lite codec pack before trying Oblivion, but that shouldn't ruin Oblivion should it?

Saw that reply on a different forum. I have:

* Tried to run all those files. They all install correctly or say a newer version is already installed.
* Verified Integrity of bla bla.
* Uninstalled and reinstalled NVIDIA PhysX with a reboot in between.
* Used the tool they recommend (DirectShowFilterManager); clicking on "Restore standard DirectX codecs" doesn't appear to do anything, although something might be happening that I can't see, I guess. But no difference in Divinity.
* Installed the ac3 codec.
* Made sure I do not have ffdshow. Some ffdshow codecs and filters come with a program called PS3 Media Server, but I have uninstalled the program and can't find evidence of the codecs still being there. I also already had PS3 Media Server back when Divinity and Oblivion worked for me.

* Note that TURNING OFF VIDEOS only works for _in-game cutscenes_. The issue we're having is already with the videos at the very beginning before the game has even started, the logo and such, and those will still try to play.

I have also updated graphic card drivers, tried to set PhysX to cpu instead of gpu, and used specific uninstall cleaning software to make sure K-Lite and MPC are properly gone.

END RESULT: now I don't even hear that second of sound before it crashes, and feel like I've wasted a lot of time on this stuff :s

I'm hoping I haven't messed up my computer in any way while trying all these things :P
Danorium Oct 14, 2013 @ 2:35pm
Hi there, I had the problem that the game didn't start (nothing happend at all)
Now instead of using steam I used the autorun file in the game folder itself and tada working.
hope this is your magical fix ;)

Same, the autorun just opens the launcher that we already get when launching through steam. It's not that nothing happens, the screen goes black for a bit while my computer tries its very very best to start the game :P but then fails. Tragic.
